So I'm working on the ability to support custom domains as usernames in Loops.

You would bring your own domain, point it towards the loops server with a TXT verification record, and it would handle it accordingly.

If you decide to migrate away, an easy process would migrate everything.

While preserving your existing content permalinks!

Spooky action at a distance, or quantum federation (a prettier term for universal identities)

Thats a fantastic Idea!

That could be an interesting thing for you too @markus

@dansup feedback: would it also be worthwhile to allow forwarding using a redirect from the .well-known/webfinger uri to a special URI on the loops instance, for people who want to use a custom domain but don't necessarily want to have that whole domain used for loops?

@dansup why do we need a 3rd form of identity? and if we're going that far, then why TXT and not SRV? and what does the value look like, and how does this play along with other services, etc etc etc
