There's an anti cheat reason for that, but yes the game can detect whether or not it is in a virtual environment.

@splitshockvirus More like anti-user reasons.
The only anti-cheat that ever works is purely server side - trusting the client to not cheat is pure foolishness.

Besides cheaters will always exist and continuing the chase will turn into a dystopia for normal people.

@iska @Suiseiseki @splitshockvirus No one implements anti-cheat as a serverside-only measure because what are you gonna go if some weird shit happens due to lags or packet loss and you don't trust the client? Just drop everything and pretend nothing happened? No one will play such a game except for free software zealots. But they won't but stupid hats that exist only as in-game items anyway. So no one cares about them. It is THAT easy 🤣

@splitshockvirus @iska how cheats can be possible in a singleplayer online game?

I'm not too sure on how genshin's reward system works but I assume it's the same as any other gacha game. Their business model is dependent on skin/characters/items/etc being of limited time avaliability and rarity. By using a side application you can either manipulate code to change odds of you winning an item or send a fraudulent API call to their servers to say you purchased whatever boost item they sell without actually purchasing it.

To prevent this developers require the installation of a kernel-level driver that monitors all processes on your computer to stop you from manipulating the game.
