@kde@floss.social @kde@lemmy.kde.social Wait, does KDE Connect allow you to share files with your iPhone now? Is it on the App Store?

More like, "You're on the council, but we do not grant you the rank of Master." XD

Hahahaha... πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚

You mean: this is new to them???
Seriously ... This is a joke on the windows.com website.

It isn't??🫣

(I don't use Windows for more than 10 years ..)

It's 2024 and they are only just allowing this for premium users? 🀯

Yeah, same here. It said, "Install Windows 98 or better" so I installed Linux. Never looked back. #KDEConnect also let's me control a perfectly serviceable laptop that has a broken keyboard, and transfer clipboards, run commands and control remote media across multiple devices!

Which reminds me - how do I get KDE Connect to allow transferring files on Windows? (Stuck there for technical reasons in the meanwhile, over Linux it works like magic)

@kde@floss.social @kde@lemmy.kde.social I 'member when Microsoft wanted to take Ubuntu to court about Convergence, a thing that was just a twinkle in MS's eye but already working on Ubuntu phones.

Microsoft is as always years behind current techniques and features. πŸ€·β€β™‚οΈ

KDE, GNOME,... are more polished, have more features and are more secure. Very impressive for "hobby projects" - as FOSS is called from M$ fanboys towards me.

@kde@floss.social @kde@lemmy.kde.social KDE Connect is such a great system. I love the sms, remote input, media control, it all works so well! Much better than Microsoft's effort ever did before I switched to #Linux full-time

@kde@floss.social @kde@lemmy.kde.social I am really lucky to view and reply to my SMS from my Android phone using KDE Connect and also to control the media with it.

My only issue comes with basic MTP support - for for reliable file transfer I need to use tools like "Android_File_Transfer" or run a Windows WM where I could work with my phone similarly to a flash drive. That is quite sad - not sure what is the reason for that poor implementation of MTP in linux...

Use KDE Connect:

On your phone, go into wher you keep your files (say, your photo gallery). Select the ones you want to transfer (1). Tap the share button (2), and the devices paired with your phone will show up (3). Tap the computer you want to send your files to and they will show up in the "Downloads" directory of that machine a few seconds later (depending on their size, of course).

It works both ways, also from laptop to phone, and even between phones and computers.

A diagram showing two phones and the process of sharing files with KDE Connect.

On the first phone, you can see an image gallery and how the user has select a picture. A labelled arrow points to the selected picture and says "1. Select". Another labelled arrow points to the "share" icon (3 connected dots) and says "2. Tap".

The second phone shows the gallery app with an unfolded share subpanel. A labelled arrow points to an icon representing a device paired through KDE connect and says "3. Share".

@kde@floss.social @kde@lemmy.kde.social Thanks, I am aware of the sharing option of KDE Connect. Works fine for me. But native MTP implementation for Dolphin would be great - I remember it used to work sometimes and for some phones but no more now... Would be useful for organizing files / folders and copying between computer and phone.

@kde@floss.social @kde@lemmy.kde.social Hehehehe. I was going to post some smarmy thing about what was the last thing anyone remembers MS innovating.

A blog about them bragging to be rolling out the ability to SHARE FILES WITH YOUR PHONE to Windows "insiders"...

I'm reminded of a guy in HS who wanted to fight me so dared me to punch him and then started hitting himself in the face to prove it didn't hurt. I said he was doing fine and walked away...

I haven't used Windows seriously in almost a decade. I just assumed ...

@kde@floss.social @kde@lemmy.kde.social ... but the ability to modify your software is only valuable to developers :p

@kde@floss.social @kde@lemmy.kde.social This blog post is about iPhone support but Microsoft has had this in Windows for a couple years now, especially in cooperation with Samsung. The Apple/Samsung #Sidecar feature in which you can use your computer keyboard to write on your phone or to drag & drop files is still not present in #KDEConnect (there is a input module in the plasmoid setting but I have never seen a button to actually use this; is this Wayland-only?).

KDE

@frumble @kde@lemmy.kde.social

Long press the spacebar on the keyboard on your phone and chose the KDE Connect keyboard (see first picture).

Then click on the KDE Connect plasmoid on your desktop, click in the text box (see second picture) and start typing.

You can also use your phone and KDE Connect as a mouse and keyboard for your desktop.

@kde@floss.social @kde@lemmy.kde.social Oh cool, this actually works! There should be a tutorial in the app + plasmoid for this, it’s not trivial.

@kde@floss.social @kde@lemmy.kde.social Not a KDE user, but I can confess that #GSConnect works perfectly on @gnome! With KDE Connect on my Android phone of course. πŸ˜‰

P.S. Don't forget to open some ports on your PC:

sudo ufw allow 1714:1764/udp
sudo ufw allow 1714:1764/tcp
sudo ufw reload

@kde@floss.social @kde@lemmy.kde.social I would never want a Microsoft app on my phone just sounds disgusting. 🀒

Some more KDE Connect goodness: during your presentations, use KDE Connect to move through your slides.

Or put your finger on the "Pointer", point your phone at the screen and a flaming circular pointer will appear. Higlight what you need by moving your phone.

This is such a cool idea! This is proof that Linux is an OS that loves showing its fun, useful, and creative side! Let's not forget that this feature can be used on computers and phones old and new as well!

Courtney Mertz

So much for the "new features" huh Microsoft?
