It has been more than 10 years since I last had a job. If each of our cells is remade over the course of 7 years, then not a single cell of my body has known what working was like, I have a faint memory of hating the whole thing, but physically I've never worked.

@neauoire what were you doing before you had the boat?

Devine Lu Linvega

@milofultz I worked at a language teaching software company called Cerego, we built smart.fm/iknow.jp.

I was writing Swift all day 🤮

Milo 2600

@neauoire And that was 10 years ago? Were you just vibing in between 2012 and 2016?

Devine Lu Linvega

@milofultz I was traveling mostly, Rekka and I made Oquonie while we were taking diving classes in Thailand :)

Milo 2600

@neauoire oh shit like scuba diving? dang, that sounds wild

Devine Lu Linvega

@milofultz yeah, we did a bit of soul searching I suppose. Knowing how to dive turned out to be an invaluable skill later haha, back then we didn't even thought people could live on small sailboats.

@neauoire a vocation is far more arduous, far more thankless, and far more rewarding than a job anyways

it has taken me a very short career to recognize that an evolution beyond career is in order.

Devine Lu Linvega

@deianeira You just had me lookup "vocation", it's a good name

@neauoire It still blows my mind that you're bringing in $1800+ per month on Patreon! Have you done any sort of write-up on how you built up to bringing in that much?

Devine Lu Linvega

@tty no, we have no idea why or how we got to this much. We never even talk about it. It's 100% luck, there's no strategy here, at least nothing that could be replicated.

@neauoire How much of y'alls income does this make up? Also curious what y'alls fallback plan would be /wo that income!

Devine Lu Linvega

@tty pretty much all of it at this point. We stopped making apps, I don't really make music to sell albums anymore. We sell a few books from time to time.

But it's a bit irrelevant at this point, we've saved more in the past five years having no rent to pay, than every before. We have enough savings now, and unimaginably low rolling costs, that we can live on our savings for years to come.

@neauoire

I think it's vitally important that people know that this is possible.

somnule

@neauoire It's not true that none of your cells have been around that long. Neurons in particular can be as old as you are.

Devine Lu Linvega

@som really? damn, I've been peddling this myth for years :(

somnule

@neauoire doesn't mean you can't reinvent yourself every seven years :)

Visions Mind

@neauoire I don't want to be intrusive and I know this might be a bit ignorant, but I'm genuine when I ask how have you been subsisting? I've been freelancing for some years and I've had some rough times. Do you mean job as in fixed/9-to-5? Do you guys get your income from your products? Crowd funding? or freelancing/remote projects?

Devine Lu Linvega

@visionsmind No no, it's no intrusive at all, feel to ask me anything if this is not answering all your questions.

So, by job I mean 9 to 5, or even freelance. I don't do either freelance not office work, I live on about 9000$/year, our main income is Patreon, it account for about about 90% of our incoming.

Visions Mind

@neauoire Thank you! Hah so its crowd funding. Are the patrons doing it for the maintenance/work you guys do with your projects and FOSS stuff? There's a lot of ppl using patreon as income but I see mostly providing either entertainment or educational/resources (esp on YouTube) in exchange. It also seems to require some community surrounding the project. But damn it's so cool that that's a possibility but yet feels so foreign/unattainable.

Devine Lu Linvega

@visionsmind It's hard to tell, I think it's a mixed of different things, some patreons back us for the maintenance on Orca, others for the sailing diaries, others I think they just like watching us play with computery things.

We don't really offer a product like a monthly video or anything like that, I think, at least I hope, that they're supporting us for our daily little experimentations that we try to document as best we can.
