A few weeks ago, I sent my 1985 Swiss Army Knife back to Victorinox for a broken blade replacement.

It came back today, fully repaired, cleaned, polished, lubricated and in a new box.

Total cost: £10 + return postage.

They sent the knife back with an invoice. I didn't have to pay a penny before the job was done.

A product that's been out of production for almost 40 years, repaired at very little cost by the original manufacturer.

I'm stunned. Happy, impressed, grateful and stunned.

Swiss Champion knife, open and showing the large blade, alongside the original broken blade in a plastic bag.

@woodpunk ❤️ Victorinox ❤️ , both the products and the company!

Locksmith

@ON8SD @woodpunk

This is one of the rare products of which I am a fan. I have been using their knives for some 40 years.

PJ Evans

@woodpunk Had an identical experience with Marshall Amps. Dropped off my brother's 1970s amp and it came back repaired, serviced, clean new valves at a total of £40.

Stoneface Vimes

@woodpunk yes. Some companies really do go above and beyond don't they. Not many, but some.

@capnthommo @woodpunk

They seem to be one of those companies that are serious about climate impact and sustainability.

@capnthommo @woodpunk

I was impressed recently when I was able to get hold of a new rubber seal for my 2006 Gaggia expresso machine which as far as I can tell was only produced for a couple of years.

Turns out it also needs a new boiler element, which will cost me £27, rather than the £500 for a new machine of a similar spec.

Dr Tim Nicholls

@IanSudbery @capnthommo YES! This is right up my street. I've been rocking a restored 1952 La Pavoni Europiccolo lever machine every day since Feb 2008 and I love the fact that I can still buy every single spare part for it, and upgraded parts too.

CIMB4

@woodpunk i wouldn't say it's out of production for 40 years. Mine looks extremely similar and was bought only about 2 years ago.
Also i once cut myself with it... No, not the knife - with the hecking corkscrew because a metal shard was peeling off and sticking out 90° from it. I emailed victorinox ahout the issue and didn't get anything back from them so tha's why i don't like them..

Dr Tim Nicholls

@CIMB4 This model went out of production in late 1985.

CIMB4

@woodpunk my point is, i can make a different colored toothpick and call it a different model. Only because it has a different name or one of the components has slightly evolved doesn't mean 90% of the parts aren't still the same

David Mitchell :CApride:

@woodpunk @CIMB4

Seems to me that a company that doesn’t change things that don’t need changing is another reason to like them.

Ratsnake Games

@woodpunk @CIMB4 I think the key phrase here is "parts commonality".

CIMB4

@krupo @woodpunk i'm not letting the swiss appropriate my german culture🧐 /j

JimmyB (he/him)

@CIMB4

I'm very surpriseds to hear it. They've replied to me on the button repeatedly over the years. This is why I really like them.

@woodpunk

bieber_butzemann

@woodpunk They seem very Customer friendly. Years ago I was in their Store to buy a new Knive. When the worker saw the broken Shell on my Miniknive on my Keychain they offered me a free replacement in the Color of my choice.

Josh

@woodpunk incredible. I think I’ll do the same with mine!

Sharon 🤦🏾‍♀️ for Harris

@woodpunk I own this same model Swiss army knife. Talk about brand loyalty!

Guillaume Ross

@woodpunk Had the same experience a few years ago with a knife from the same era. Amazing service. And it’s not like it originally cost a thousand bucks either!!

David Högberg

@woodpunk Very cool! Do you have a link to share where one access this kind of service?

gullevek ☢️

@woodpunk @jannem They do that? Wow. I have the same broken blade. Need to investigate how this is from far far away from the swiss.

bee

@gullevek @woodpunk @jannem This happened to me with a Wenger knife last year. Now I’m curious to see whether they also offer a service like this

mb

@woodpunk @skyfire747 I love companies that still do this kind of stuff. They’re few and far between these days.

Paul Barnfather

@woodpunk OMG, I had no idea you could do this!! I will totally be getting my battered, broken one refurbished 👍

Dr Tim Nicholls

@clanger9 I sent it to them with the form I printed off the website and half expected to either never see it again, get told that they couldn't fix it, or get quoted more than the price of a new knife.

I'm incredibly happy to have been wrong on all counts :-)

Paul Barnfather

@woodpunk that’s fantastic! I will try this approach 👍

SellaTheChemist

@woodpunk I sometimes wonder whether next April I shouldn't devote my #ClassicKit column to origins of the Wenger and Victorinox knives that have accompanied me since I was given one at the age of 6. The larger Opinel blade came later, and I have used mine in the lab for quick fixes more times than I could even count.

Susi Arnott

@sellathechemist @woodpunk
Do that thing. With models and uses/user types folded in:)

SellaTheChemist

@SusiArnott @woodpunk I mustn't think of it at all. I have another column to write by Friday and its progress is not even Shandean.

Chapter XL from The Life and Opinions of Tristram Shandy:

 "I am now beginning to get fairly into my work and by th help of a vegitable diet, with a few of the cold feeds, I make no doubt but I shall be able to go on without my uncle Toby's story, and my own, in a tolerable straight line.
Now, "

followed by four squiggles indicating the storyline.
aetios
@woodpunk Huh, I should do this. My knife has had a broken point for ages.
Dennis Koch

@woodpunk I just read that you received your knife that you sent them in 1985 😅 I should go to bed.

econads

@woodpunk @clive
That's the kind of advertising that can't be written.

𝕏osé

@woodpunk Y así es como debería de ser todo...

And that'show everything should be...

JimmyB (he/him)

@woodpunk Really sorry though that their place in Brunnen has closed for the 'build your own' thing. Took my daughter there a few years back and she made a knife from the components. It was lovely and a really nice afternoon.

Dr Tim Nicholls

@sol_hsa It definitely is. I asked them to leave the red scales and anything else that wasn't broken, original. It's definitely my old knife that i bought for a camping trip when i was 15 :-)

Jari Komppa 🇫🇮

@woodpunk Good. I RMA'd an ipod at some point, got a completely different device back (as in, different generation of the device). I'm not complaining, but... =)

Josh

@woodpunk @sol_hsa I really appreciate that they sent the broken blade back too so you didn't lose anything! Especially nice for something with sentimental as well as practical value!

Ward Cunningham

@woodpunk
What? Does this company not have stakeholders?

brentwood

@woodpunk That’s awesome! I’ll remember that if something happens to mine.

Landwomble

@yoguiignacio @woodpunk replacement shields are cheap and easy to DIY if it helps - they just pop off and the new one snaps on. Loads of aftermarket options, metal, G10, different colours etc!

Rachel ✨

@woodpunk

Looks like my knife - bought mine in 2004 in lucern. ❤️🙏🏼

Dave

@woodpunk

this post just sent me into a youtube rabbit hole, wondering how they're made and put together. Best video I found was this. youtube.com/watch?v=mmY8g8k0T_

Luka Rubinjoni

@woodpunk It's not even a complete blade failure, just the tip.

Dr Tim Nicholls

@rubinjoni I remember the exact moment I broke it, levering the lid off a tiny tin of Humbrol model paint.

Dr Tim Nicholls

For those that are interested, it's a 1985 7 layer 'Champion c' according to Victorinox.

Oh, and they sharpened all the blades too!

Didier

@woodpunk Were you reading my mind? I was just typing this question 😄

Eldeberen
@woodpunk I already had my Leatherman repaired twice, for free. I love those brands that do real lifetime warranties 👍
Acesabe

@woodpunk
Anyone know if #Leatherman offers a similar service?
My blade snapped when I lived in the UK but now I'm in the EU (Spain), I did look online once but didn't recall any specific details or prices on warranty or repairs

The Eddie Show 🎄

@woodpunk

The most astounding aspect of this story is that 1985 was 40 years ago.

.vad//hakara🧭

@woodpunk I really need to send in my Tinker Deluxe, but I'm always paranoid that it will get lost by the mail service between them and I.

T Lisa B

@woodpunk

I particularly like the smell of the oil they use with those knifes. It's something special ...

Chris Glass

@woodpunk Victorinox is very famous for this here (Switzerland). Also:

- they never fired anyone for economic reasons, instead, they save during the good years (so they claim, at least)

- when their direct competitor went out of business (Wenger) they bought the whole company and kept everyone. Wenger still operates today.

Stephan M. Unter

@woodpunk That's amazing! I didn't even know they do that. I should send in mine as well!

Barry Goldman

@woodpunk love my swiss army knife, constant companion. tho i used to carry in pocket, not so much anymore since 9/11. weird. the one i have now is with a 2" long saw blade. i can saw through an inch and a half tree in a minute. always amazes me

nafri

@woodpunk nice to see a customer-friendly company rn

Maria Langer | 📝 🎬 ⚒️🛥️

@woodpunk @seanbala This is the way it SHOULD be. I’m so glad you got it fixed.

Sadly, there’s too much “disposable” junk these days. The mindset is changing from “buy quality and keep forever” to “buy cheap and replace it when it breaks.” How sad is that?

Aroop Roelofs :verified:

@woodpunk I love the fact they even sent back the old blade.

rag. Gustavino Bevilacqua

@finlaydag33k @woodpunk

A service like this will bring more customers than a $1M advertising campaign, so it is a bargain for the company!

Aroop Roelofs :verified:

@GustavinoBevilacqua Advertising is what allows you to get started.
Good service is what allows you to keep in business.

@woodpunk

Victor Maldonado

@woodpunk I hope I can do the same with my Explorer 39 years from now 😃

Feòrag

@woodpunk Add Secrid to the awesome list. I went into their Rotterdam shop with every intention of buying a replacement for my worn out wallet, and they repaired it, replacing the worn parts, for free!

Kat

@feorag @woodpunk Wow. How long have you had it?
I'm more impressed by the fact that you actually managed to wear one of those things out, because it's one of the few things that I haven't used to destruction in a fraction of its theoretical working life.

Jorge Bejarano

@woodpunk that's how things should be made this days 👍

Roelmen

@woodpunk I have had a similar experience with Leatherman. Great service!

M_DA_DS

@woodpunk I have the impression that european steel blades manufactorers, contrary to many other categories of producers, are quite resistant to enshittification.
A lot of products are still made by centuries old companies (I'm thinking of fixed blade razors and shavettes for example)

wortwart

@woodpunk Looks like I've got exactly the same model. Mine was already a few weeks at the airport because I forgot to take it out of the backpack before the flight and at the Eiffel tower security check where my then five year old daughter helped me get it back from the grumpy guards.

depone

@woodpunk didn’t know that’s possible. Maybe I’ll send in one of mine soon …

Inkican

@woodpunk Where's the corkscrew? How am I supposed to open this wine??

Bill Tschumy

@woodpunk @clive I’m happy to see a company fight against planned obsolescence. We need much more of this.

Samuel Johnson

@woodpunk where did you ship it from? I'm totally going to do that with one of mine (several decades newer than yours but still in need of an overhaul).

Dr Tim Nicholls

@SamUpstate I'm in the UK and shipped it to the UK service centre.

Samuel Johnson

@woodpunk hmm. I suspect that the cost for shipping round trip from the US will exceed the cost of a replacement knife.

I'll bet there are places stateside that will do repairs though. I don't know why I didn't think to look before.

SUPP UP.

@woodpunk good read. I’ve used Victorinox for years, they never fail to get the job done and their customer service is top quality. Glad you experienced the same.

Andrew Briscoe

@woodpunk Great products. I use a Huntsman at home and when adventuring.

Jenny 🏳️‍🌈

@woodpunk this is cool! Might need to do this with mine as well.

robcornelius

@woodpunk

Leatherman offer a free replacement service for broken blades too. I am on my third replacement multi-tool with them.

Kat

@robcornelius @woodpunk They do? I should have a chat with them about one of the screwdriver blades.

robcornelius

@KatS @woodpunk

the steel leatherman uses for their knife blades is good for taking and keeping an edge but tends to be rather brittle. Don't know about screwdrivers etc but it can't hurt to ask.

🇺🇸 🇺🇦 🇮🇱 🐧 🥦

@woodpunk I was really into these knives as a teenager. I could never get the blades sharp. Sad to hear that they are no longer made.

Dr Tim Nicholls

@Methylcobalamin Oh, you can still buy some lovely Swiss Army snives - it's just this particular model that got replaced with a newer style.

DoomsdaysCW

@woodpunk Unfortunately, I lost my original Swiss Army Knife that I've had since I was a kid. I've since replaced it, but it pleases me to know that my lost knife is probably still functional. More things should be made to last -- and be able to be repaired!

Dr Tim Nicholls

@andrew 1985 7 layer Champion c (according to Victorinox)

José Ramón Álvarez

@woodpunk Maybe I shoul try with my Swiss Card with loose case...

raphael

@woodpunk beautiful!

to add to the list of companies with good repair experiences: i once handed a fountain-pen curious friend my TWSBI diamond 540 – a workhorse pen built by an OEM-turned-maker-of-their-own-line-of-pens from taiwan, sold for a really strong price given how much pen you get – to try out. a known weak point in earlier models was the plastic cap breaking right next to the end of a metal ferrule clamping over the threaded part. the constant twisting and untwisting, weakening of material, yadda yadda.

long story short, my friend thought the cap was pull to remove, not unscrew to remove, and tore it right off the threads.

after testing (and some very intense apologising on her part, and puzzlement on mine), we both took that as our cue to buy the overhauled model, the diamond 580 (they keep iterating over models, fixing weak points!). on a whim, i emailed their support, reporting the entire affair, and they sent over a replacement cap for free. despite already having a new pen in hand!

@woodpunk beautiful!

Avid Presto

@woodpunk very nice, they are so handy and great that they look after historical products especially when they become something you grow fond of.

Maciej

@woodpunk@mastodon.online And yet people still wonder why I buy and recommend Victorinox

PacificNic

@woodpunk In a couple weeks, everyone on Mastodon is going to own a Victorinox Swiss Army knife because of this post.

Jonathan Mull

@woodpunk I have this knife with a few different wounds. Hmmm.

Sascha Pallenberg 🇹🇼 ♻️ ⚡

@woodpunk one of those stories that gives me hope... beautiful and btw. I had the same one.

What a company!

Jesus Margar

@woodpunk out of production for nearly 40 years? I'm sure I got one of this as a child (now lost) and I was born in 1985 (so I probably got it well into the 90s, given that's a knife). Do they really not make them any more?

Chris Glass

@jesusmargar @woodpunk not this particular model.

Victorinox still makes lots of swiss army knives, fear not 😊

BeeCycling

@woodpunk Victorinox there, demonstrating how to stay in business for 140 years.

Third spruce tree on the left

@woodpunk

Not only is their product superior with excellent customer service they are a fantastic company to be employed by: in good times they sock $ away so in downturns they don't have to lay staff off (may have changed in recent times, but thats what they used to do.)

Margash

@woodpunk @tobru

A few weeks ago we had friends over from Australia. At one point one of them said he would like to get his knife fixed (30+ years old) and asked if there was a Victorinox shop nearby that we could stop at. Turns out we were actually driving past the factory that day.

So we stopped there on our way back home, he showed them the knife and they fixed the side covers, replaced the toothpick and oiled the knife within 10 minutes of entering the shop. The cost? Nothing.

Margash

@woodpunk @tobru They also mentioned that they service any pocket knife they've produced for 5.- and bigger repairs (like exchanging a blade) are 10.- flat. That's the price list.

Chris Johnson

@woodpunk This is how businesses should be run. I’m happy to say we had a similar experience with our Wüsthof Trident kitchen knives, when a few of the synthetic handles fractured.

concretedog

@woodpunk well isnt that just bloody wonderful! Absolutely great stuff.

DrPs𝕐 :verified: :mastodon:

@woodpunk oh, I think I'll head to the nearest Victorinox dealer with mine, the spring of the scissors is broken for ages. And I lost the little screwdriver (screwed in the corkscrew -- that's a lot of screws --)

Kool Depeche Moe Dee

@woodpunk this is one reason why I have three Victorinox watches. When I got my first corporate job 22 years ago I bought myself my first “nice” watch, and I am wearing it right now as I write this post. ❤️Got it out of the drawer and put it on this morning! They’re nothing super special (although I like them a lot) but they have endured and kept great time and the company’s customer service is great. Love me some Victorinox and I love that you’ve cared for this knife so well!

yanncphoto

@woodpunk
Yep, that’s what they really mean with « lifetime warranty »

Book

@woodpunk Oh my science! This is awesome!

I have one too (a touch newer than yours). How do I do it?

Ben Thompson

@woodpunk amazing just how successful companies not owned by private equity can be.

Locksmith

@woodpunk
Look at this beauty. My father purchased it in Switzerland circa 1980. It then sat in the kitchen for some 5 years until I took possession of it. I just took the pictures for this post.

No rust, blades still sharp, fully functional despite the dust. Note that the warranty book says "5 years".

disky

@woodpunk I am not one for brand association or loyalty but it's things like this that really keep me coming back. It has nothing to do with the company itself, it's the people who show care and love for the work they do.

Neil

@woodpunk #repair is always better than buying the same product new again. Especially these days, when products seem to be made to go broken. Love it!

Thoralf Will 🇺🇦🇮🇱

@woodpunk

That's really a cool story.
Sadly, it's not a story I hear from many companies these days.

Guess I know which company I will buy an Army Knife from.
Always wanted one, never bought one so far.

Gabriela Salvisberg

@woodpunk Had similar great experiences with Cherry keyboards (which I love using for work and play).

ang_mo_uncle

@woodpunk guess why. BC you're telling this to everyone, and that marketing alone is worth more than 15€ or whatever. And guess what? They deserve it. There's a few other companies that have similar repair practices (i.e. being able and willing to repair at a fair price) and they should be be applauded for it.

utsuho

@woodpunk and the original blade comes back too? that's awesome

Koutsie :unverified:

@woodpunk holy, because i have one with my name embedded in it i got as a gift and the plastic has broken in the parts where it connects and I've been thinking about this for a month or two now!

That's awesome, maybe one day I'll get my own one back to its former glory!

Mensch, Marina

@woodpunk That's quality and repairable quality is sustainable!

Jargoggles

@woodpunk
They make fantastic kitchen knives, too. I've had one for over a decade and use it all the time. The thing is a tank and holds an edge really well.

Jon Het-CIS.

@woodpunk I lose mine before I break them, and have been buying them since the late 70s. They can afford service like this when they rarely require service.

I just wish they would bring back the SOS pouches since my last one was stolen.

R.Marx

@woodpunk There's still companies like this one! I had the same experience with RayBan sunglasses which didn't survive a hearty hug. Had to pay exactly: 0€.
Just great!

xs4me2

@woodpunk

That is the definition of quality mindset…
