@Shatur @noctilua @dansup It's a nightmare to self host last time I checked, which is what I would like to do.

@f4grx @noctilua @dansup I never tried self-hosting it, but even if that's the case - it's a different issue.

@Shatur @noctilua @dansup No, if I cant self host it, they're making it hard for me to use, which means they want to keep control. thats out of question for me. Call me extreme, thats ok.

Installation hardship does not inheritly mean control over thing in question. You are never tied to the flagship instance, nor to Element as a client; if you have hard time selfhosting it, you can alway choose a provider who went through weeds and enabled signups. Admin of my homeinstance hosts a Matrix instance, so I stuck with it, and I use Fractal to access it. I don't feel inferior to users of flagship instance either.

@f4grx @noctilua @dansup There are plenty of other instances, so I don't think it's that hard.

@Shatur @noctilua @dansup Thank you all for telling me how I can use matrix but that was not my concern.

@f4grx @noctilua @dansup That's not what I said.

You mentioned that it has libre issues and that Element controls it, but that's not true. By saying other instances exist, I meant that other people have figured out how to self-host it and it's not that hard to do.

@Shatur @noctilua @dansup OK, so the problem is in my initial description, but I still feel bad with this project even if I dont describe it correctly.

@f4grx @noctilua @dansup That's a totally valid complain!
That's sad, I hope they improve it 😢

You are not wrong in that it is tedious to self-host, never did this myself, but folks who did almost universally tell it's such a mess of a service. At least whatever that main Python backend, I believe people had better experience hosting the beta Rust one.
