@Strandjunker How did someone manage to invent a "federal minimum wage" and at the same time fail to index link it in the obvious way? Were they deliberately setting it up to fail?

Alan Miller :verified_paw:

@TimWardCam @Strandjunker there would likely be pushback by the obvious suspects to indexing to inflation, but I think it'd be great to index it to congressional pay (or perhaps congressional staff pay). So many of the ones who'd object to it rising automatically would also *never* consider turning down a raise for themselves.

floydgump

@TimWardCam@c.If they could get away with it there wouldn't even be a minimum wage just flat out slavery where workers live on the job sites.But who knows what's coming if they get their greed king back in there.

Nahmia

@Strandjunker it doesn't matter how much they are taxed. they will have their outs. those outs should be eliminated, and the tax system should be made more fair. the realistic tax for middle class is around 40% while listed is 35% but they actually pay around 15% or less. getting rid of loopholes will raise billions or more without changing that tax rate and reduce complications for everyone.

Erik Kemp 🇪🇺

@Strandjunker Agreed! And yet when people try to organise a European Citizen's Initiative called 'Tax the rich' it only receives 349.674 out of the 1.000.000 needed signatures: tax-the-rich.eu/ .

So either:
1) People agree on taxing the rich, but don't care enough about changing it to become politically active

2) Those who find this topic important don't know how to bring together people and movements along a common goal.

Gilbert Pilz

@erikkemp - You can't use a system that is owned by the rich to constrain the activities of its owners.

The pandemic showed us what to do. If even a significant fraction of us were to simply stop working for even a couple of weeks, their system would hemorrhage trillions of dollars.

yadarehey

@gpilz @erikkemp Agreed. And that may be the only thing that will be able to stop their continued and accelerating accumulation of wealth.

James Wells

@erikkemp
It it more likely option 3;
People don't want to tax the rich because they think they are going to win the lottery and become rich.

@Strandjunker

floydgump

@nikatjef @erikkemp @Strandjunker Yep a lot of fools chasing the delusional fool's gold.

rootfake

@gumpfloyd @nikatjef @erikkemp @Strandjunker yeah, the whole "Americans don't view themselves as working class, they view themselves as temporarily embarrassed billionaires" thing is a huge part of the problem, it explains so much of American behavior.

dana

@Strandjunker Kinda begs the question, What is the end point of this progression, if not addressed in some way?

Atrapado🌴🍫

@Strandjunker 4000 Minimum wage, three words too, and also set maximum wage, 3 word they hate more than tax, because taxes are so easy to avoid, bahamas is right on the corner.

Leta_Darnell

@Strandjunker And yet the billionaires say the working class are the stupid ones for borrowing money.

Daeh Nekat Tocs

@Strandjunker

Welcome to the 1700s!
But don’t worry, your children can work for minimum wage too!

DELETED

@Strandjunker a more realistic comparison would be to use average cost of living. Comparing the exceptionally wealthy with the minimum wage is just mixing stuff up.

To be clear, I agree with your point but it's straight up demagogue to compare the wealth of the extremely rich with the worse legally possible salary

mathew

@atom @Strandjunker Fun fact, it's not the worst legally possible salary.

US restaurants are allowed to pay staff less than minimum wage, based on their being expected to make the rest of the money in tips.

And US prisons are allowed to pay prisoners less than minimum wage. In fact, slavery is still legal there.

Daci

@MichaelPorter @Strandjunker Good point. Although fair, its bad optics to take away money the rich "earned". People get nervous about their own savings.
Transfotming the system so a few cannot earn that much, but a majority earns more, would be more popular. Raising the minimum wage by A LOT would be a good start. Democratizing the workplace next, finish up by Socializing the means of production. Easy peasy.

Michael Porter

@dacig @Strandjunker Piece of cake 😄
We’re just fighting the Golden Rule… “Those with the gold, make the rules.”

Unknown1234_5

@Strandjunker important to note here though that lack of taxes is not the problem, loopholes are. they would be taxed a lot but in (according to politicians) an effort to get them to contribute to charity there have been many loopholes put in place. thus the solution is to close such means of legal tax evasion and make new methods of getting the same or better charity contribution without the tax dodging.

terag1e

@Strandjunker

Four words: INCREASE THE MINIMUM WAGE!

Jason Stuart

@Strandjunker imagine they tracked inflation against the wealth of the billionaires.

craignicol

@Strandjunker @onepict tax wealth.

Tax individual wealth. Tax corporate wealth. Tax anything that isn't creating jobs or cycling money back into the economy.

(remember when companies had massive R&D departments inventing cool stuff and employing people, just to offset corporate tax? Let's have more of that)

Shawn Webb

@Strandjunker Do you have a source for those numbers?

Paul

@Strandjunker And most of those big giant gains were made during the pandemic. Even tho we're told these men are the most wealthy, they're not. The ppl who are even wealthier don't make their wealth public. If they did, you'd start asking questions they can't answer. Oh, and taxing them wouldn't matter. Govts print the money they need now. Taxes don't fund the govt, they don't need them. Taxes still exist soley to control our wealth.

DaveyComments

@Strandjunker If anyone 'wonders' why we are all heading towards a WWIII... #justsaying

Richard 🔶UK #RejoinEU

@Strandjunker yeh. Hard to believe they did something exceptional or work harder when you put it that way. And anyway, capitalism works best when the poor have money

xconde

@Strandjunker or even tax just those 3 guys to start with.

RAFarquhar

@Strandjunker how? These guys have nominal income. They borrow against their assets and don’t have “income”. It’s all worth that hasn’t crystallised. I’d suggest once a companies worth hits certain size it must have 1/3 ownership in staff trust. Once is hits the next “level” it has to have a further 1/6 community ownership. Dilute their worth by redistributing - much better than taxing. This avoids money going to wasteful governments but going to workers and communities direct.

Osiris2025

@Strandjunker

Had they not had that wealth and used that wealth, we would not have:

EVs like Tesla, SpaceX, Boring Co, . remember that the Left LOVED Electric cars and Tesla.

we wouldn't have Amazon or Whole Foods

we wouldn't have Facebook, VR, Istagram or Whatsapp

The 3 men combined, employ almost 2 million people that get much more than minimum wage.

Their wealth is tied into the companies they have created. If that wealth were removed, the companies would suffer as well.

TheStrangelet :bc:

@Osiris2025 @Strandjunker Tesla was founded by two engineers, not Musk. No Amazon, no Facebook, oh no. "Without billionaires, we wouldn't have monopolies," isn't a strong argument.

DELETED

@Strandjunker tax them, and the churches. At least the churches with political messages and influence

Radio Resistance

@Strandjunker In that same time frame, I can look back and see that I actually make quite a bit more money than I did in 2012, not 10 times more money, but more, yet, I absolutely have way less money than I did then. They're clearly taking our money and making it their own. I don't understand why people can't see this. These people are literally stealing our wealth, and people act like these people are "successful." If that's success, I got some robbing I need to get to real quick.

Drew Crecente :verified:

@Strandjunker

🎉 I'm also a fan of marrying & divorcing the rich.

❤️ Very grateful to MacKenzie Scott for her humanity and philanthropy.

Drew Crecente :verified:

@starlily @Strandjunker

... okay, instead:

If you happen to find yourself already married to somebody who is asset-rich but humanity-broken, divorce them.

Unfortunately, this seems a more likely strategy for equitable wealth distribution than genuine tax reform.

EarthMomma

@Strandjunker

These increases arent even earned wealth----------ITS SIMPLE INTEREST

If you put $18,400,000,000 in the bank today you would have MORE than 207,100,000,000. in 12 years

CAP WEALTH AND TAX THE FUCK OUT OF ANYTHING OVER THAT CAP

Song: Tax the Rich!

The politicians say there's not enough to go around
So they're laying off the teachers, and the schools are shutting down
Will our children live as serfs, suited only for their chains?
If we love them, we had better use our brains

With government turned upside-down, the money flows uphill
And it makes its tired journey there against the common will
Now we need that money back, and our lives are on the line...

@mudala @Strandjunker Taxing the rich fairly makes for a more equitable society. It's not about personal happiness at all. Ask yourself what kind of society you want to live in?

Pudão

@Strandjunker People who work for the rich won't tax the rich.

crazyeddie

@Strandjunker Between the three of them, they could give half a million people 1 million dollars each and still have billions.

Except none of that money actually exists. It's all in stocks, many of which are probably just numbers that have been sold and loaned out a billion times in the last second alone...concurrently.

So etwas wurde klassischerweise durch eine währungsreform gelöst (alles Geld wird wertlos, neues wird ausgegeben) oder durch ein pogrom (da Christen keinen Zins erheben dürfen, waren die Bankiers ja alle jüdisch).

U.Lancier

@Strandjunker how much DID each of these super rich pay in taxes during these 12 years on these gains in wealth?

If they claim to be taxed fairly it should be the same sum like any other working citizen with a decent income of 100k/a has, too.

ehurtley

@Strandjunker Even the state with the biggest minimum wage increase since 2012 is only a 50% increase.
