@kimvanwyk once again we tried but failed to compete, @natbat's pumpkins were eaten by gophers You know, at first I thought this was a picture of a gargantuan Cheeto. π But okay, pumpkin, yes, I see that... π If you jump on the livestream right now, you can hear a song by our local pumpkin bard https://www.youtube.com/live/mbofUc1ZINk @simon https://www.rhs.org.uk/advice/grow-your-own/features/fascinating-facts-and-figures-pumpkins 2390lb! A personal record for this grower, Leonardo from Napa Also now holds the record for the largest pumpkin ever grown in California OK here comes the last pumpkin, from world champion Travis who broke the world record with his 2,749lb pumpkin here last year @simon @simon Looks like the European competition was on Sunday. Heaviest 1152kg = 2.540 lb from Belgium @simon I'm not gonna lie Simon, these big pumpkins look like a 400lb guy who had to be lifted out of his bedroom on a forklift for bariatric surgery. Completely unappetizing, would not watch. @simon Hang on, is that really > 170 stone? There are pumpkins that weigh more than ten fat men? I had no idea! @robinhouston oh yeah, these are VERY big pumpkins When this festival started ~50 years ago a winning pumpkin was only about 150lb @simon I grew up in CT near a giant pumpkin grower (back when the records were still 800ish pounds) and the fate of most winning pumpkins was to get an outboard motor attached to them and sail them around the lake... is that still a thing? Built a little tool for turning a web page into Markdown and easily copying it to my clipboard - it's a very thin wrapper around the Jina Reader API https://tools.simonwillison.net/jina-reader Details on how I built it (by prompting Claude) here: https://simonwillison.net/2024/Oct/14/my-jina-reader-tool/ I'm increasingly finding that "Copy to clipboard" is an essential feature in things that I build, mainly because select all then copy and paste on mobile phones is still pretty inconvenient @simon I have leaned on "copy to clipboard" apps/pages in everything from DjangoCon US to my dozen or so Django side projects. I often need markdown from a data source that I want to paste into a newsletter, YouTube description, or someplace else. I can normally write these in single-digit minutes vs. spending 15 to 30 minutes on a less flexible API call. @simon Hi Simon, I don't want AI using my site, and I block the user agents of many AI crawlers. Unfortunately, Jina 1. Does not acknowledge robots.txt This ain't it. @simon @simon That is really nifty. It inspired me to use the Jina API in an Apple Shortcut so that I can just hit the share button from my browser, select the shortcut , which constructs the Jina URL, makes the request, and then puts the result in my clipboard. All in one go. https://jina.ai/reader/ @simon How do you get a 500kg pumpkin onto a truck, then off the truck and onto a scale?! |
@simon observing or competing?
