When logging into Wordpress.org (login.wordpress.org) you have to confirm that you are not affiliated with WPEngine.

While this looks petty and childish it's another sign the Wordpress is in the hands of people who can't find less destructive ways to handle their fucking midlife crisis.

@tante do you have a trustworthy writedown of what is actually happening there? I tried to understand that around a week ago but what I read from the wordpress guy didn't sound too unreasonable, but apparently I'm missing something and since that whole debate appears highly emotionally charged presumably most sources are strongly biased in one direction or the other.

DJGummikuh

@tante Holy shit, thank you.
What an asshole

JPeck

@tante @DJGummikuh this is a great explanation. seems like a total power play

DJGummikuh

@boscoandpeck @tante what shocks me most is the blatant disregard of what ostensibly are separations created to prevent exactly what is happening right now. In all seriousness, obfuscating power reach like that should automatically carry jail scentence, monetary punishment is not enough to disincentivize others from doing the same

JPeck

@DJGummikuh @tante sadly, it won't happen. we couldn't even charge people on wall street for what they did to ruin the worlds economy in the great recession. no way this would be more than a financial slap on the wrist

@tante @DJGummikuh Damn! Is it wrong that all I really care about in this is whether my years of WP content that almost nobody reads will survive?

slotos

@farbel @tante @DJGummikuh no, that’s exactly where you should start.

HiIamInfi

@tante I still don’t understand how this could escalate to that level …

Any reasonable organization had just sent a cease and desist saying „Hi please change your name as your names implies that we might be associated when we are not“

That’s it. On top of that he could have called them out for not contributing enough to upstream and that could have been it.

wortwart

@hiiaminfi @tante AFAIK they did just that but WP Engine sent their own C+D.

HiIamInfi

@wortwart @tante what? How does that work? On what grounds? Did not hear that part of WP lore yet

Rick Gregory

@hiiaminfi @tante the WP mark has been explicitly said to not be subject to trademark by the WordPress foundation. And WPE has been around for years so it’s a bit late for Matt to whine about it

Mike Farley :verified:

@tante Matt Mullenweg is abusing his position at the Wordpress Foundation to attack Automattic's biggest competitor.

Emil Jacobs - Collectifission

@tante Alternatively they're raising awareness to an issue they think is important.

I wasn't giving this much attention, but I just had a look and I think they make a fair case:

@collectifission might not be a bad idea to get another perspective joshcollinsworth.com/blog/fire

(I HAVE been following the whole thing as a former Wordpress consultant who hasn't worked with either Automattic or WP Engine and there's a huge difference between "not entirely incorrect" and the ... absolute unhinged set of actions that Matt's been doing. Also turning off Revisions is a very rational choice supported by wp-config.php, one I've done for years before finally leaving WP for static sites.)

Juergen the German

@collectifission @tante Read the blog mentioned above. While the point *may* be valid, the way this is going down is absolutely not OK. A child may kick your shin while playing, but you don't shove them into a canyon for that (Bad example, I know but that's how I interpreted the story)

David Scott Moyer

@collectifission @tante Yeah, this sucks, considering that I use a private WP blog for my writing, which involves lots of revisions.

Bredroll

@tante this has made me want to find out what WPEngine is

Nini

@tante So so much of the tech world is plagued by manchildren having a crisis or two... these men would rather make their users jump through a dumb little hoop to placate their own paranoia than go to therapy.

Troy

@tante is expect this from one of Elons companies. Absolutely childish.

Dawid Rejowski

@tante

Reminds me of the recent draw.io licence change. Very immature.

David Dorward

@tante I wonder if they have actually put that in their terms and conditions … and gave sufficient notice of the change to their customers … and refunded the customers who they now do not allow to log in.

I suspect this is grounds for at least some people to sue them.
