maia roza!!

I'm launching a hosting provider which gives heavily discounted resources to open-source and non-profit projects!

80% cheaper than digitalocean
40% cheaper than hetzner

while i'm still testing my infrastructure i'm offering your first instance with 2 cores & 2 ram gig for free(!) so i can test how my hardware performs on production.

if you're interested you can check out the site or just reply/dm me!

(edit: go follow the mastodon as well! @wedotyou )

(edit 2: if you’re curious about our specifications, policies, and detailed pricing, it’s all on our help center: help.wedotyou.net/ )

@maia not being a jerk, want you to succeed, so pointing out it's "wear" not "ware" :)

@maia "competitaive" on the web site is a typo :)

maia roza!!

@neingeist haha i thought i had read it over 3 times but apparently i missed that one, on it now ty!!

@maia the last minute typos are always in the first sentence or in a big ass heading :D

@maia what does "open-source project" mean? If I am running open-source software, e.g. Vaultwarden or Mastodon, does that qualify? Or is this more targeted at the creators of those projects than the consumers?

Either way, really cool to see, thanks for doing that!

maia roza!!

@scott hey! it's more targeted towards people running open instances of open source projects - so it could be the creator of a project, or someone running a mastodon server with open registrations. either way - if youre not sure if you qualify just let me know what you're doing in more detail and i can let you know!

maia roza!!

@buster hey! DM me your matrix or discord and we can set something up for you!

Hippo 🍉

@maia hey, this looks cool!! ✨️

Is it only for open source projects or is like personal sites and random experiments also good? (Maybe a moot point for me since I try to open source my experiments but) 👀️

Anyway, if you still have slots I'm definitely down for a testing free VPS 😁️

maia roza!!

@badrihippo hey! while we’re still in our testing phase i’m happy to have any open source project of any kind on our cloud, even just tinkerers! you can DM me your discord or matrix and we can have something setup

Hippo 🍉

@maia yayy thank you! Just DMed 🙂️

Kat

@maia I'd settle for the same price as Hetzner but 100% less transphobic.

I was going to reassess my hosting options for a relaunch of Syscat, too.
I have sovereignty concerns about hosting in the UK, though. Do you have any European presences, existing or planned?

maia roza!!

@KatS hey, our current locations are as follows: London, Amsterdam; planned for next year: Switzerland, Finland

maia roza!!

@KatS just added these components to the site to make the selection less confusing. if you do decide to evaluate us i'd be very happy to provide you some resources to try out for free

Kat

@maia That's all the encouragement I needed. Thanks for the explicit clarification about being queer-friendly!

I shall make the request in the morning. Possibly after thinking up a better name for the project :)

Kat

@maia Cool! Amsterdam sounds good.

It'll be a promo/docs site for the project, combined with publicly-accessible data about things like F/OSS projects.
Won't be open (or even private) signup for a while yet, though, as I have yet to implement a proper authorisation mechanism.

ahoyboyhoy

@maia @KatS don't think I have an OSS project to host, but you're full rate pricing looks very competitive. I'm in the US though, any US East plans?

awandi34

@maia typo on the website on lgbtq section:
"...staff our queer..." should be "...staff are queer..."

Latte macchiato :blobcoffee: :ablobcat_longlong:

@maia@girlboss.ing
Can we get some more info?
How does server management work here? Is there a fancy web interface, are they KVMs?

pandora

@maia @wedotyou I am just curious how it is financed and how sustainable your concept is

maia roza!!

@pandora it currently is financed by my company HBS - who makes money from consulting projects and such - based on our current pricing we should be able to make it sustainable within around 3 months.

pandora

@maia thx for the clarification and transparency. Probably wanna test it out

maia roza!!

@pandora we're currently taking clients on a case-by-case basis while we scale up our services, but a self service portal should open up within the next few months hopefully

maia roza!!

@pandora just to clarify though, anyone can send a sign-up request, it just takes me a bit of time to provision each person^

@maia @wedotyou hi maia, this is very cool and I'd be very interested in trying it.

One comment is that I feel like the hetzner pricing listed is odd? Priced at $6.22/m when I'm paying $3.79 for the same specs

wedotyou hosting

@eb that price is based on: AMD64, 2 gigs RAM, 2 cores, 20 int storage + 20 block storage, in Germany - perhaps you have an ARM server?

Evan B🥥ehs

@wedotyou speaking of, I forgot to pay the hetzner bill. Thanks for reminding me.

wedotyou hosting

@eb no problem. but when you're ready to give us money just lmk /j

Evan B🥥ehs

@wedotyou I'd be willing to try it though I have a lot of questions.

1. I don't see terms, privacy, or fair use policies. I'm mostly interested in what is in the scope of allowable to host? Loosely defined above as 'open-source and non-profit' but as I'm sure you are aware, both of these things exist on spectrums
2. How robust is the dashboard? Billpay? How easy is it to provision new servers? Scale them?

wedotyou hosting

@eb
first, terms & privacy policy are in the agreement provided when you intend to get a VM, however i will put them in the footer tomorrow.

the free offer is provided to those who run an open source project that is to be publically accessible on the web - anyone not qualifying in this can still use the service but the free offer isn't applied.

the dashboard is a bit of a mess right now (proxmox), but it's being rewritten as we speak for something more intuitive and scalable

@wedotyou all this checks out. I self host a lot of open source, but the stuff is almost exclusively used by me.

The big one at Hetzner is beanbag.boehs.org/share/JGBYO4, which is technically open source: github.com/boehs/miami. I would be willing to move it over, but I believe that this is not the intended use.

Otherwise, let me know when you enable billing :)

weakish

@maia DO’s cheapest plan is $4 (512 M, 1 vCPU, 10 G, 1 IP) and the corresponding price on .| is $2.35 (with 1 G RAM instead). Not sure the data transfer is unmetered or plan-to-be-metered-but-not-implemented-yet, but I assume most open source projects will not have a lot of transfer.

Powersource

@maia @wedotyou how do we know this deal won't change once we're comfortable there?

maia roza!!

@powersource @wedotyou i mean obviously i cannot guarantee anything, but you have my word that we will not significantly increase prices after we’ve properly launched, as we’re currently just in a closed beta subject to applications

Powersource

@maia @wedotyou ok. But then I'm unfortunately gonna have to consider you just another company and assume that the discount is gonna disappear at some point
