My (backup) iPhone says, "<XXX> 18 days left. This number is registered to your Apple ID, but is not associated with this phone. You can keep using the number for iMessage and FaceTime until it expires."

The thing is, XXX is the number on this phone. Can anyone explain what I am to make of this inexplicable error message?

I'm wondering if I should remove it and try setting up iMessage again but that might make things worse.

@robpike I know that "own phone number" was an afterthought in the whole system. At least on non-iphones it is very common for a phone to not know the number of the inserted SIM card, because it's not stored/not stored correctly. (Usually this is no problem since the phone doesn't need it to work.)
It might be related to that?

Some operators have a short code that you can send/text in order for them to actively push the correct configuration (again) to fix this.

@robpike What does it mean that alumni of Bell Labs can't understand their own phones? I have begun to think that "tech" is just another form of "elder abuse."

@bks "Tech" is a form of elder abuse. Try to explain to my elderly parents how to use a modern "smartphone". Bonus points for explaining how to use it safely.

@bks @robpike I wanted to say that Rob might not be tech savvy enough to fix this.
What a joke.

@bks @robpike and I kind of hate that some people will blindly follow Apple saying it's the only well designed tech out here, whereas there are many counter example of it being very poorly designed: the mouse you can't use while charging. Still don't know what's the benefit of this design?

UX is so important, and it needs to be well thought in every part of your system. Which is a tremendous work, but I believe it pays dividends!

@bks @robpike Yes, my reaction exactly: "Hm, let's see what one of the most famous computer scientists is up to. Oh, he's trying to setup his phone :)"

@robpike I noticed that ability to receive an SMS to a number is a core part of how Apple IDs get associated to phone numbers… when traveling, if roaming data was turned off, I would lose association. I didn’t get that exact error message, but possible it’s related?
