You ought to have used Mini-USB (not Micro-USB) and mandated a sligtly better fit of the plug in the socket so it cannot slide out normally.

Benefits: trivially visible orientation, no wrong-side plugging in, and much more stable. And (besides power-only cables, which support only 125 mA anyway) all cables do the same thing. Even Mini-USB OTG is available, I’ve used it on a Zaurus spitz.

I sometimes have to try both sides even with USB C because one side just doesn’t want to go in, and every time I plug in a USB C, it feels like the middle part is going to break off easily.

Durable tech is done differently.

Just the other day, I saw that soldering USB C sockets is also extremely tricky due to tight spacing, low tolerances, and some other things I don’t recall exactly (but I’m not a soldering expert), so this is actively harming hobbyist use as well.
