@Heliograph and giving up it means it goes to a spammer that'll ask the next person 2k to use it...

πŸŒˆβ˜”πŸŒ¦οΈπŸ„

@Heliograph And after 5years stagnation, I did end up using two of my long running domain names this year. :)

Heliograph

@wmd πŸ₯³ :clapping: hope they're low maintenance πŸ˜†

πŸŒˆβ˜”πŸŒ¦οΈπŸ„

@Heliograph Both static sites, one running on my own server and one on codeberg. Keeping a web and gemini server running is easy enough to automate, so if I forget, no harm done. :)

Heliograph

@wmd I wondered they might be static :awesome: way to go!

πŸŒˆβ˜”πŸŒ¦οΈπŸ„

@Heliograph Yeah, the one thing I haven't found a good static solution for is photo albums or portfolios. I've been looking for a while, but anything I've found haven't fitted well in my work flow, which involves a lot of GUI work, including geo taggin them and having a map.

Suggestions welcome :)

@Heliograph the dream never dies and my wallet hates me for it.

Heliograph

@carbontwelve could be worse πŸ˜† you could be collecting old car doors

pseyfert

@Heliograph joke 's on you. My hobby projects all die after git init. There is no domain to renew, it never gets that far.

Heliograph

@pseyfert you're just much smarter than a heap of us πŸ˜†

Old Man in the Shoe

@pseyfert @Heliograph you’re doing projects wrong. You start with the destination. Then git init and THEN you give up.

@Heliograph @DoctorDisco There is a third button:

Ooooh now I can justify ditching this one and buying a new one instead!!!

@codeofamor @Heliograph don't say that !! πŸ˜† I'm already guilty of being a serial domain owner. I currently own 5 'live' domains and possess a ring binder with a two inch stack of old nominet registration certificates dating back to the early 90's

My main 'live' domain is for my own personal mastodon instance (the keen eyed among you will notice THIS ☝️ is NOT a personal instance) and that's going as well as could be expected πŸ‘‰ www.alittleofnothing.co.uk haha

Code of Amor πŸ’˜

@DoctorDisco @Heliograph I'm afraid I don't know what the impressive-sounding ring-binder stack is for, but I TRY to be prudent in my domain purchases. I do not always succeed.

@DoctorDisco @Heliograph I have at least the following❁:

- a primary domain to handle anything I want external internet access to privately
- a private-use wiki domain which has been superceded
- a dollar domain I picked up to reverse-target gullible angry trolls and never got around to it
- a dedicated mail-handling domain (used to have two)
- two or more .link domains for self-hosted url shorteners for respective sites
- a new public identity domain on which my masto is hosted πŸ”

Um... yeah. I think that might be it but idk πŸ€·β€β™€οΈ πŸ˜΅β€πŸ’«

@Heliograph Not cool. Not cool at all dude/ss. That's no laughing matter, I could really use that 120$.

@Heliograph How could your dream grow if you have 12 USD to spend whereas people like Musk have 12 000 000 000 USD to spend on their dreams?
Musk had a dream. He bought it for 44 000 000 000 USD.

malerbabomba

@Heliograph Been there, admitted the dream is dead πŸ₯²

Yes, ... been there !
Today, there the same situation for :
French retirement system,
Debt system (worldwide),
Industrial junk-food productions and eating,

On a la mΓͺme situation pour :
Le système de retraites en France,
Les systèmes de debt (niveau mondial)
la production et consommation de malbouffe

Domain no renewal are sad.
More easy than those other situations.

@luciedigitalni very good πŸ˜…πŸ‘ I've set mine to auto-renew :blobimfine: :blobcatgoogly2:

lucie digitΓ‘lnΓ

@Heliograph i think it's important for it to be a concious choice

Heliograph

@luciedigitalni it is!!! I'm just hopeless πŸ™ˆ :blobcat_smilehappyeyes:

@Heliograph
After running a web business for 20 years, when I finally decided to close shop and let all the domains go.. I pushed the button and quite vividly remember saying..

"Well that's that"..

Heliograph

@avlcharlie *tips hat* sovereign πŸ‘ thanks now I have a visual how this could go

Heliograph

@MSugarhill they all started little and each by themselves πŸ˜†

Markus Sugarhill :breadpats:

@Heliograph and they do not deserve to die! we NEED dreamers!

no seriously, I myself had put a mark: not more than three unused domains a year, and not longer than one year unused. in the end, i have only one with my name, and one with my favourite nickname. and those are used for my email account.

@bit101 @Heliograph Tumblr offers them but then you have to use their platform. Wordpress also with $13 domains.

High Mome Djecibel Aester

@Heliograph I'm not listening. I can't hear you. I'm busy typing "w... W... w... joker.... .com "

Thaha Jemni

@Heliograph I try and keep the domains at a minimum, but mostly wait one year extra to make sure no service or any of my software is still calling it.

Basic security.

Giulio Cesare Solaroli

@Heliograph @andrewg
Last year I was finally convinced and letting expiring two unused domains.
But then they auto-renewed.

Phil Haigh

@Heliograph Reminds me that I’ve still not set up a site for wayofthelazydeveloper.com

damnparanoia

@Heliograph

.io is like 48$ now, so if your dream dates back to the beginning of 10s you pay even moar

@Heliograph ICANN is nothing more than a greedy, international cartel, that makes $billions ripping off people for domain names they don’t own.

Imagine having to go through a cartel, just to register your business name. No, you go through your own country, not some secret, organization in Denmark.

Nobody β€œownes” domain names. We rent them from an ICANN authorized registrar, like godaddy, who also makes $billions registering and β€œmanaging” domain names they don’t own. It’s just an endless churning of money for nothing. That doesn’t include website creation or hosting, which costs $hundreds more per year.

Tim Berners Lee gave us the www. navigation system, for free!

Yet the free internet has been stolen and claimed by bad actors like Google, who block our domain names from being searched, unless we pay to play.

The free web is flooded by endless β€œSponsored Searches”, to the point where the Google searches have become an endless rabbit hole of misdirection.

Patrick Mevzek

@politicalfinger @Heliograph "Nobody β€œownes” domain names." Correct, same as for phone numbers. "We rent them from an ICANN authorized registrar", yes and no. ICANN regulates gTLD space, not ccTLD space. There are over 1500 TLDs nowadays, including one per country in the world. If you want to be free of ICANN, then choose a ccTLD.

flamion :verified_dragon:

@Heliograph I had u-are.gay for a while until the renewal would've been 56€ πŸ’€

Al Sweigart

@Heliograph I just need one more year, bro. One more year and I'll have this project up and polished and ready for everyone to see!

Sylvain Drapeau

@AlSweigart @Heliograph

I'm sorry, but you probably won't. We probably all won't. And we'll probably renew anyway, all saying "one more year".

But that's ok! It's the dreams that keep us alive!

Could be worse. Try paying for HOSTING for years for a dream that was never realized...

Luc

@Heliograph the cost will have to be updated, though. It’s getting pricier by the month!

Patrick Mevzek

@Heliograph And sometimes don't renew and let others pwn you: labs.watchtowr.com/we-spent-20 Stemming from "As part of our research, we discovered that a few years ago the WHOIS server for the .MOBI TLD migrated from whois.dotmobiregistry.net to whois.nic.mobi – and the dotmobiregistry.net domain had been left to expire seemingly in December 2023."

Gregg Alley

@Heliograph I lost a really great domain name before auto renewal was a thing. πŸ˜–

Fardels Bear

@Heliograph

I've had the perfect domain name for almost a year now, but I can't find the right blogging platform, or discover if it's worth the faff to get it all set up.

Blue

@Heliograph@mastodon.au I have a domain name zho.pa (kinda like if there was a domain name assho.le, but in Russian) and unfortunately its about 200 bucks a year

L-Theanine
@Heliograph@mastodon.au I got rid of a domain that has been snapped up.
I sort of wish I had kept it, but it's throwing money away for no reason really
