I pretty much only use Firefox for Mastodon, I NEVER whitelist any website anymore for Javascript. I'm going to fuck off to using Dillo and Brutaldon, screw it all to heck.

@neauoire I'm hacking on Brutaldon off and on, let me know if you have any problems!

@dorian Oh really?! Well I do have one request that would be a game changer for me.

Adding loading='lazy' to images

unhinged and unafraid

@neauoire I'll look into it! I've never used that attribute before, is it set in the img tag?

Devine Lu Linvega

@dorian yeah, all it does is that it will delay the request to load an image until I see it, for bandwidth-challenge people like this will be be HUGE <3

Devine Lu Linvega

@dorian cheers :) keep me posted, I'll be happy to help test this.

@neauoire I'm currently struggling with setting up a public server. Once I get that up I'll share it for folks to test.

unhinged and unafraid

@neauoire so it seems that loading="lazy" already gets set on all media posts that brutaldon renders. Avatars have the loading="auto" attribute

Devine Lu Linvega

@dorian So I've been thinking about this, and I think it might have been here for a while, but that Netsurf doesn't recognize as a valid attribute. The issue I have with brutaldon is how media loads by default on netsurf, and so the broadband usage is higher than classic mastodon where you can hide media, and have it load only on click.

icoon

@neauoire what about toot on the command line? Should also have image support.

Devine Lu Linvega

@icoon I've started using Tuba, and it's a lot better than toot, esp since most of the people I follow around here are artists who post images.

corbẏn

@neauoire try Zen Browser a Firefox fork with vertical tabs and privacy in mind github.com/zen-browser/desktop

@neauoire one day you'll go off grid and when you reconnect the ai will just download itself

Tim Lavoie

@neauoire I wonder how hard it would be to just keep a local source repo, that you can rebuild as needed with your preferred configuration.

Devine Lu Linvega

@tim_lavoie I never managed to actually build firefox, I tried a few times but it takes so long, I usually give up before it finishes.

Tim Lavoie

@neauoire Ah, well. Now I'm sort of curious, so have just kicked off snarfing a copy of the repo.

(Step 2 of this, in case anyone else wants to play along. firefox-source-docs.mozilla.or)

I think the thing I am most curious about is how easy (or not) it is to build a copy without some controversial feature. E.g. leaving everything else alone, just not build whatever functionality is seen as most obnoxious.

@neauoire ahhh that’s terrible. I feel like every piece of popular software is just tossing one in. The windows computer I use for work has 3 chatbots that must be defeated each time I want to do anything. If I want a chatbot, I’ll use a chatbot app thank you very much.
