> #Microsoft confirms that #Windows 11 Recall #AI is not optional — a glitch made it appear so in the Windows 11 24H2 KB5041865 update
tomshardware.com/software/wind

But don't worry, the company that is unable to correctly implement a toggle switch assures us that they definitely implemented this new immensely complex piece of technology nobody asked for directly in the operating system in a way that is secure and under no circumstances puts anyone in danger in ways security researchers said it will.

@rysiek now sit back and watch as it is eventually revealed that "no, the training data does NOT actually stay on your machine, it is shipped back to Mothership in order to improve your experience. But don't worry it is toooootally anonymized with aaaaal nauthy bits removed fo real fam rizz rizz no cap boom noodle".

just watch.

Why do I say this?

THIS is Microsoft's answer to " where will we get clean free training data from when the whole internet is rotten with LLM content and everyone is suing because rights infringement".

Juuuust Watch.

Yes, we'd have to be naive to think that this won't be a huge issue. I can only imagine what's going to happen when places like law firms and medical practices realize that Microsoft's turned on the data siphoning without telling them.

For normal users I always advise installing something like AME, for example AtlasOS's AME. Which will disable all the telemetry as well as updating (so it can't auto-reinstall). It does mean that you have to reinstall windows to add updates but that's a consequence of linking the telemetry and update systems together.

I still remember back when online security updates first started taking off and Microsoft absolutely assured people that the updates would only ever be used for security fixes and absolutely nothing else, while implying that it was just paranoia to think otherwise.

Oh, do you have a link to that? This would be relevant to my interests.

Sorry, this was something I read ages and ages ago, I tried to Google for it, but with only vague memories to work off of I didn't have a lot of luck.

patter

@kaasbaas @rysiek and when you're using Windows 11 at work (with or without random domain controller, permisison & stuff) then broadcasting company secrets (or worse) to MS

Using Microsoft OS in any capacity but your wage slave job is now an intelligence test

Tek say vote

@HarbingerOfSalem @rysiek I wouldn't go that far. As an ex Amiga user, it gives me great joy to say that “Windows is probably fine for gaming, although I'm glad I don't have to use it for a living.”

DELETED

@HarbingerOfSalem @rysiek So what you're saying is

- Don't play games if they only run on Windows
- Don't produce music unless on an excessively overpriced Mac

?

I think broad statements like yours serve more as an intelligence test...

(And yes I'd use *nix rather " today than tomorrow, but it just doesn't work like that)

@rysiek Windows 11 looking like a real bust. Maybe time to load up XP again. 🤣

enoch_exe_inc

@mori_au @rysiek I still use XP, believe it or not. That said, it’s extremely obvious how outdated the system is. But it works, and I have a ton of legacy applications on it I can’t easily port elsewhere.

@mori_au @rysiek
🥥 Windows 7 was the last version that didn't chap my hide, mori_au.
Unfortunately, Eye had to use later versions in the work environment. Fortunately, Eye could use Linux at home. 🥥

mori_au 🇦🇺

@jstatepost @rysiek yeah I only use windows for work these days. They can do what they want- I just need to get paid in that regard. But home is now macOS for better or worse, and I’m thinking of giving Linux a go one of these days.

samiamsam

@rysiek

i deal with medical records on my work computer

how, exactly, does this NOT violate PII and HIPAA

goedelchen

@samiamsam @rysiek We're using Citrix Workspace. Citrix Workspace from Linux is blocked - only connections from Windows. AFAIK, no reason was given. The rumor is, that they couldn't prevent copy&paste to the "private" machine with the Linux version - opening an unmonitored channel to extract data.
In April someone comfirmed that Recall is capturing Citrix Sessions - that's a massive, unmonitored channel and I guess Win11 will have to be blocked, too.
Even if it works as MS promises.

Tucker's Balz 4 Harris/Walz

@jrod3737 @rysiek
🥥 One can dual boot a confuser with any other Linux distro, too, if one doesn't personally get along with Fedora.
Eye have nothing against Fedora, Eye just want people to know that they have plenty of other choices as well, if things don't work out. 🥥

Otte Homan - remember Geordie

@jstatepost @jrod3737 @rysiek thoughts ... do Recall & Copilot use hardcoded ipv4/v6 addresses or is everything going through DNS? Can a pi.hole regex filter block that effectively?

@rysiek glad I moved to #linux a couple of months ago. I knew they would reimplement it, they always do.

Dan Neuman

@rysiek Good luck with using this in hospitals, Microsoft. #HIPAA

Logan

@dan613 @rysiek As if they aren't all still on XP or 7 🫠By the time Recall is even on their radar it'll be so obsolete that the AI overlords will have already taken over.

Dan Neuman

@gill3tt3 @rysiek Maybe for most, but my spouse's team is struggling with it. Security updates must be applied and they can't use an unsupported OS.

RejZoR

@rysiek "glitch" I swear I'm removing this crap from my system with force.

Phillip

@rysiek ugh. I wonder if it'll be uninstallable on windows 11 pro. I'm sure my boss would be pissed to find out there's an LLM watching all of the trade secrets we handle

MaybeMyMonkeys

@pb4000 @rysiek there has to be. The military and non-US governments will say no.

Phillip

@MaybeMyMonkeys @rysiek those clients will use windows ltsc with all tracking bs stripped away. We use that for iot machines at work and it's *so* much faster than normal windows. They keep it locked down tight though so normal consumers can't get it :(

Bandersnatch

@rysiek That's cool. I switched to Linux Mint 6 months ago & haven't missed a damn thing.

Eric Lawton

@rysiek

When I took computer science, it included classes on operating systems.

The Oxford Dictionary of English still uses the ancient definition from way back then
"the low-level software that supports a computer's basic functions, such as scheduling tasks and controlling peripherals."

When will they update it to "the low-level software that reports all activities back to the vendor and sells products and services to the renter"?

@bmacDonald94

MaybeMyMonkeys

@rysiek they lie. They can turn it off but don’t want to. A billion sources of data to mine.

keirFox

@MaybeMyMonkeys @rysiek It's the "oh, yeah, we *totally* didn't mean to do that. Really. But that's cool, we'll pay the fine" cost of getting ahead in business.

@rysiek 20+ years ago I decided to use Gentoo Linux as my main driver. Every day after that provided another reason I made the right choice.

Irongut

@rysiek In other news, I've been a user of every version of Windows from 1.0 - 10. I will never install Windows 11 on a PC I own.

Argonel

@rysiek if this "feature" was any good and something people would want Microsoft would be charging for it. Since it is free it isn't something they feels has value.

Otte Homan - remember Geordie

@Argonel @rysiek ... maybe they're jyst "whoops" accidentally rolling this out and then start charging us all for an annual license subscription to get the option to disable it? #crapware

@rysiek Windows OS... I honestly don't understand why it even exists.

v̾i̾t̾r̾i̾o̾l̾i̾x̾

@rysiek I wonder how much longer they support Windows 10 because that's a non starter

Loki Laufeyiarson

@vitriolix I think that would be october 2025. At least that was what my startup screen told me when it pointed out my pc isn't good enough for windows 11....

v̾i̾t̾r̾i̾o̾l̾i̾x̾

@Loki_Laufeyiarson my machine also failed the test.

plenty of time to dump windows entirely (i keep it around for gaming).

SmashedRatOnPress

@rysiek I was going to buy a new Windows machine sometime early next year, but with news like this, I definitely will NOT buy a new Windows machine until it's possible to get rid of Copilot and Recall. Why are some developers so stupid and annoying... they don't fix critical bugs, but keep rolling out #AI garbage that nobody wants or needs.

Michał "rysiek" Woźniak · 🇺🇦

@smashedratonpress it's not the developers. It's the managers and executives.

Because the software is not the product, and people who use Windows are not the customers.

Hype is the product. Investors are the customers.

And investors right now are salivating whenever "AI" is mentioned.

SmashedRatOnPress

@rysiek Mmm, yes I use "developers" loosely to mean "companies that are developing this software". I take your point that it's not so often the actual programmers in trenches that are the primary culprits.

Michał "rysiek" Woźniak · 🇺🇦

@smashedratonpress yeah. I think making this distinction is important. Putting the blame where it belongs.

Tucker's Balz 4 Harris/Walz

@rysiek does it still require a specific "AI" CPU to run or is this on every #Windows11 PC regardless?

metasilk

@rysiek yep when Microsoft stops supporting windows 10 I'm probably switching to a Mac, which has its own issues, but at least doesn't have recall....

Thomas

@rysiek They really want everyone to switch to Mac

Sector9

@rysiek
It's so nice to see that after all these years Microsoft has finally perfected their #1 product... Lying.

The Dinosaur Dave

@rysiek im rolling my system back to win10, fk this noise

Resuna

@rysiek Because the last time Microsoft made something stupid part of the Windows shell it turned out so well.

Chloe Raccoon

@rysiek @patterfloof Next, custom UEFI for machines to disable the parts needed to run recall, as IIRC your pc needs to be "copilot+" rated. I can see mods to break that rating being produced...
