They were for hydroelectric power and were up for a 50-year recertification. Ultimately, with community pressure, Pacific Power decided the dams did not produce enough power to make keeping them in place worth it in the face of environmental harm-mitigation requirements and tribal citizens and their allies demanding recertification be rejected for the good of the river.
