I'm thinking of temporarily removing threads.net accounts from the popular accounts list on #FediDB because their follower counts include non-federating accounts.

What do you think?

@dansup It's called "federation" for a reason, we should be open and welcoming to *anyone* who behaves.

Andrew

@dansup I think if the page is just going to be "celebrities who are on threads" otherwise then yeah, exclude Threads accounts. Presumably Threads has its own page for that?

partizan

@dansup I think it's okay to keep it, but maybe add a filter. Like `?exclude=threads.net`

@dansup Basically, I think interoperability between the Fediverse and Threads is important. But as long as Meta doesn't take care of the EU rules, we in Europe won't benefit. So please remove it temporarily.

Goldmaster

@dansup just a thought, but what if only include threads accounts that HAVE federated?

dansup

@Goldmaster It's impossible to get that count, because threads doesn't differentiate between accounts with federation enabled and without

Goldmaster

@dansup ah that's the issue. It's funny how people jump from twitter to Facebook threads when everyone knows that Facebook is just as bad. It's very similar to a 2 party problem.

When the very reason for a Elon musk takeover was due to how twitter was set up.

The biggest challenge Mastodon has is the networking effect. Social media managers only look at engagement not which is the best platform option.

One could give "the keys" to the enterprise and they could still turn down the system.

@dansup
Of course it's possible. All it takes is a test account on the fediverse which tries to follow the accounts.

@dansup Instagram accounts are part of federation now

Nagaram

@dansup
It would be nice to see actual fediverse accounts

Osma A

@dansup
Include the accounts which can be followed.

Oblomov

@dansup until Threads implements full buffalo bidirectional federation, it has no place being considered part of the Fediverse

Erlend Sogge Heggen

@dansup yeah Iโ€™d prefer default-hidden but still available with a toggle.

Is there any hope of ever having data on how many *fediverse* follows a Threads account has?

Kaleb ๐Ÿ“

@dansup is it possible to filter for those that federate?

๐ŸŒˆ Lascapi โ‚

@dansup Well, today the first account is barackobama but I cannot reach it from my account.
So, in this point of view it's not federated.

And so I think you can remove thread.

Darnell Clayton :verified:

@dansup Yeah, I just posted about this on @darnell@darnell.day!

You can โ€œroughlyโ€ estimate how many Fediverse followers a Threads account has (outside of Threads itself), but they need to provide more transparent stats, similar to what Flipboard does.

I will submit a request to them to offer this stat on peopleโ€™s profiles.

Emelia ๐Ÿ‘ธ๐Ÿป

@dansup @darnell maybe just have a toggle? "Hide accounts misreporting Fediverse follows"

Stemy

@dansup The simple existence of threads is an insult to the fediverse, you should remove it definitely.

Charlie Fish

@dansup Why not make this a toggle and allow users to pick?

Linebyline

@dansup I've supported a "wait and see" approach to Facebook (by whatever name) on the Fedi: Wait and see if they ever decide to start acting decent, and *then* think about whether or not to federate with them. Don't hold your breath waiting. They're proven hostile.

If you could tease apart how many of the followers are non-federating and exclude them from the count, then go for it, but IMHO that's far more effort than Facebook deserves.

Jonathan

@dansup Just add a domain filter feature. Everyone gets what they want and you get a cool useful new feature.

Ame

@dansup A separate list for threads accounts would be super useful as you can find generally popular accounts which federate to fedi that way!
