Organic Maps

To avoid similar situations in the future, we recommend using Obtainium and our GitHub releases directly. They are available immediately without delay, there are beta/preview builds, and they have optional Google location services (you can turn them off in settings) to help get your location faster: github.com/organicmaps/organic

And why not f-droid ? It's a real question. I love @organicmaps
and use it from f-droid.

Are there any restriction for you?

Organic Maps

@zorg the pros of Obtainium are mentioned above

@organicmaps
OK, but for people who don't want Google and are not interested with beta releases, the pros of fdroid are " it's easy to use" and automatic updates.
What is against fdroid for you?

Thank you

@organicmaps same story with conversations (shorttime) and Transistor.

I guess google doesn't want privacy friendly foss apps in the gstore.

@organicmaps

I just got it from FDroid, I hope that's ok. 😜

@organicmaps does Organic Maps via Obtainium work within Android Auto?

Stephan Paternotte

@organicmaps I'm on GrapheneOS. I doubt it that Kinginstaller will function within GOS' security measures.

@organicmaps Guys I don't know if you don't see my comments. Android Auto won't work on apps from fdroid/obtainium/your website, No matter the signing process. It all depends on android version, but there are too much people using android 12+, so recommending a method that will make app partially unusable is wrong.

Organic Maps

@nictakiego Not everyone needs Android Auto. There is also a workaround, can you please confirm if it works with Obtainium build? github.com/organicmaps/organic

@organicmaps I already tried installing as "Google Play Store", but it didn't work. This github already mentions, that you need to patch phenotype.db on android 11+ (i have 14), and for this patching root is required. Also last commit to it was 7 months ago, so pretty much outdated. And I think there are more people currently using OM on devices with android 11+, than on android 10-. I know not too many people use android auto, but there are many people depending on this functionality. And suddenly if they update with an apk file now, AA won't work anymore.

Tbh I don't know why it doesn't work when installing as play store, maybe there is some another workaround, but I tried many ways (except rooting and more advanced stuff) and nothing worked, and when installed from play store (aurora didn't work as well) it magically works. As in github issue I mentioned.
Here is another guy that couldn't make it work on android 14 (even with root, on custom ROM though): github.com/organicmaps/organic
They say there is some way when using magisk, but it again requires root.

@nictakiego it would be great to find a way to run AA easily without installing from Google Play

nictakiego

@organicmaps Yeah it would be, but google is a bitch. Their "waze" app works with AA regardless of installation method (even from apk file).

@organicmaps Do I need to uninstall my current app of Organic Maps, obtained from Google Play Store?

multifact

@organicmaps I would try geting it from @fdroidorg first. After all, and for many of us, one good reason to use Organicmaps is to get rid of Google (BTW it would be great to also get rid of the anti-features, but I guess this is food for another thread)

Organic Maps

@multifact @fdroidorg Those "anti-features" look like someone's unfounded wishes, esp. compared with other apps. There were many detailed discussions about it already, so no need to flood again.

Organic Maps

@multifact @fdroidorg some users need Android Auto and faster location detection that are not available in FDroid builds.

taivlam

@organicmaps How does this affect those who installed the app via @accrescent?
