"Not sure if legit user, seo bot or vote ring"

Starting to see some interesting behaviour on pixelfed.social where spammers try to evade detection in creative ways or unusually high interactions on specific new accounts.

I've been able to keep most of it at bay but our admin and moderation tools will need more work to keep up.

Since we don't have analytics or detailed logs, it's challenging to be able to recognize these patterns. Will need to rethink our approach, feedback welcome!

There are a lot of ideas I have to help solve these issues, but one has to be careful not to sacrifice privacy or other core principles when dealing with this.

I could write a more automated system using trained models to identify this, but in doing so, we'd need to ingest and store so much user and meta data.

And in doing that, we could get too comfortable in collecting and using that amount of data that we'd be no better than Instagram.

No easy way to solve, requires careful consideration!

@dansup is it like comment spam or likes or something?

@dansup I've noticed a few of the spam bot rings you referenced - but my (admittedly limited) impression is that the local feed is much cleaner than it was when I first signed up in October 2020. I almost never see the kinds of low quality advertisements or people mirroring unaffiliated Instagram accounts that were somewhat common back then. I've been impressed with the improvment and the overall quality of the content.
