@sillyCoelophysis @Agrawals_1_Twitter_Dream @mybarkingdogs @ernie This would completely destroy all publishing. Every artist would have to self publish their own work instead of sell the publishing rights. And by self publish, I mean own the printing presses and distribution channels, everything. No Amazon self publishing if they can’t bargain their rights. And who would want to buy a book or painting if that didn’t come with the right to possess that work?

@SludgePhD @sillyCoelophysis @Agrawals_1_Twitter_Dream @mybarkingdogs @ernie correct. But to do that you have now removed the “transfer rights … for any reason”. My point here is that absolutes and easy answers are not the answer. Even in your scenario you are using the force of government, essentially eminent domain, to take away an artists right to sell their IP. That devalues their work and ability to find ways to profit from it.

@SludgePhD @sillyCoelophysis @Agrawals_1_Twitter_Dream @mybarkingdogs @ernie The way I see it, the problem is the coercive transfer of rights not the ability to transfer those rights. I am glad Dolly Parton was wise enough not to relinquish those rights early on. I wish Taylor Swift could have done the same thing, but am glad she is now wealthy enough to reclaim those rights.

Right.

I'm trying to imagine a bookstore full of books, but they all just say "not for sale." 😄
