@ernie WTAF. ACF is a vital Wordpress plugin that literally thousands of other plugins also depend on. Before all this madness I didnāt even realize it had been purchased by WP Engine. @ernie@writing.exchange is he going to ban this plugin from Wordpress because itās from WP engine? Lmfao The irony is not lost on me that the Internet Archive went out of its way to acquire the physical versions of millions of books and loan them out carefully and in a limited way, and is facing a near-extinction-level event over it, while for-profit and VC-backed companies are just stealing peopleās content and making up excuses to validate the bad behavior.

@ernie the stranglehold that publishers have on our entire culture is obscene. We have to find ways to support authors that don't further empower these ghouls. Meanwhile, z library doesn't bother paying publishers anything, and has books and scientific articles freely available to all, and has yet to be taken down. TOR URL: I am now in the Dumb Domain business. Buy a Dumb Domain from my store. It will generate new domains every time you reload the page. See what you get. And tell a friend. @ernie Bookmarked. And color me surprised that noone had reserved `breezypasta.yachts` Hard to disagree with this take. https://www.computerworld.com/article/2117752/google-gemini-ai.html What is happening with Yuzu and Citra is a travesty. It will have a chilling effect on future console development. Tomorrowās developers are todayās emulator hackers. If anyone would still like these emulators before they go away, I would note that theyāre still available as flatpaks on Linux. Good, give Apple all the scrutiny. https://www.theverge.com/2024/2/26/24083511/apple-eu-investigation-web-app-support @ernie lol name me proper working progressive web apps with notifications from companies that aren't constantly trying to push you to their app. I'd love for more full featured web apps, too bad no one offers any. Who exactly is complaining? This is hard to explain, but this debate has about protecting culture. It always has been. If some communities want a moat, that is their decision, not yours. Some people came here because they didn't want to worry about their culture being disrupted by outside factors. To pretend this is not a real concern, as this blog post implies, is disingenuous. The dogmatism exists because they're trying to protect their culture. I realize it can be frustrating sometimes and there are real reasons to find it frustrating, but understanding why this comes up is key to understanding this entire messy debate. @ernie i'd start tooting all day long just to maintain ownership of the title. @ernie Mastodon's witnesses: hello sir do you have a time to talk about our master big fluffy gigant Since I appear to be getting a whole lot of fresh follows at the moment, I just want to offer a shout to one of the coolest people Iāve met on here from the ābeforeā days. His name is @ajroach42 and he recently helped start an online TV station for his community, New Ellijay TV: https://newellijay.tv In many ways, @ajroach42 embodies a lot of the ethos of Mastodonāheās passionate about community, heās extremely creative, he isnāt in this for purely commercial reasons, he runs a makerspaceāand I think that you should get to know him if you donāt already. I wrote a profile on him a few weeks ago before the launch of NETV: https://tedium.co/2022/10/21/new-ellijay-tv-diy-tv-network/ I have started a pop-up newsletter about #Mastodon. Itās called #HowToMastodon. I will publish in the mornings usually, but give the first issue a look over this way: https://midrange.tedium.co/issues/mastodon-onboarding-tips/ This will replace my usual newsletter, MidRange, for at least this week. I gave it a dedicated banner. @ernie Really good article; I hadn't even considered I was making the assumption of fitting in with how I identify myself with an existing instance's community vibe. We're all told to choose one of the join buttons, but not how that obliges us! @ernie Thanks for writing this! Much appreciated (I joined Mastodon on Friday myself). For me, the choice of a server was easy - oslo.town is an instance for people who identify with the city of Oslo, the capital of Norway. And @matt who runs it seens like a decent guy. Of my different interests, what should I choose an instance based on? I am in favor of a more eclectic social media presence. // Thanks again, I will follow your work noving forward :) |
