@canadaduane
Is that related to Ubuntu moving all VLC updates / fixes to their subscription only channel?

@Natanox @canadaduane
Ah ... no.
VLC updates are only available through Ubuntu Pro security updates which you have to sign up to.

kazord

@Steveg58 @Natanox @canadaduane it's not.
You just dont have live kernel update without the subscription, VLC dont do any shit with the kernel, dont worry.
Juste update the snapcraft nightlies.videolan.org/ or update from a ppa (they where an officiel ppa but seems for daily dev build now launchpad.net/~videolan/+archi)

Then why are all all the VLC updates only listed under Ubuntu Pro and are greyed out?
I'm not really interested in nightly builds just the stable versions.

kazord

@Steveg58 @Natanox @canadaduane stable are on top, using snap since 3.0
Are you still on VLC 2.0 (.deb) package from the store ?

kazord

@Steveg58 @Natanox @canadaduane hum, weird, 3.0.20 package is un stores ( on debian for exemple) packages.debian.org/buster/amd

Is it a require dependence missing ?

If you still want the lastest without trying to find this error somewhere 'apt remove VLC && snap installรฉ vlc'
(On install the debian .deb )

@Steveg58 @Natanox @canadaduane Do you have a source for this? Pretty shady if true...

Cal Alaera

@Steveg58 @Natanox @canadaduane I ask because it appears to be *not* true. packages.ubuntu.com/noble/vlc- shows v3.0.20 is available; videolan.org/ shows latest version is v3.0.20?

Steveg58

@Cal @Natanox @canadaduane
Okay that kind of proves my point ... 3.0.20 is available but software Updater says all packages outside of Ubuntu Pro are up to date.

@Steveg58 @Natanox @canadaduane @PurpleJillybeans I'm pretty new to Linux and a little out of my depth here, but I'm not sure why your software updater isn't picking it up. Mine is. The package is right there to download at, for example, packages.ubuntu.com/noble/amd6 (and I'm pretty sure you can't give a browser a pro subscription). Flathub even appears to have v3.0.21 which isn't even available from the VLC website yet?

Screenshot from Software updater showing all the VLC modules greyed out in the Ubunto Pro list.

Not just vlc. That whole "certain updates only for Pro" was what made me switch from U to Fedora. Very happy with that choice. Withholding updates is a definite no-go.

I agree switch away from Ubuntu for that craz, thing. And switch away from snaps, it's an Ubuntu ploy invention, too. The proper alternative that also works on Ubuntu for now would be to install the #flatpak from. #Flathub here, or really works cross-distros (unlike snap):

And surprise, you get updates for free there: flathub.org/apps/org.videolan.

Yeah, Snaps have totally broken the whole transparent update process. I have been intending to quit Ubuntu for a while I just need to collect the spoons.

That's for Corpo-Fascist accounts, still free for home use.
