What kind of autism is this when you pay attention to and attempt to recognize as many languages around you as possible while being in a city?

I always thought it's just a fascinating, fun exercise that everyone does but apparently no xd

@rail_ I am doing the same thing, who knows maybe I am not a neurotypical panda 🙃

@radpanda flashbacks to when me and my partner spent probably over an hour trying to listen to conversations of a family one table over at a restaurant, trying to determine what the fuck do they speak before coming to a conclusion it's a multilingual family speaking at least 2-3 different languages - wow…

yeah we're both neurotypical af xD

@rail_ You're not alone! I do, and sometimes surprise myself by understanding parts of conversations despite not speaking the language.

@rail_ I do it all the time, and even when I have some traits from the spectrum, my psychologist says I'm not in it. In this case, it's just I'm really interested in languages. I already speak 4, can read a 5th and some other smaller languages and dialects (all latin based :) and can read two non latin alphabets (but don't understand much the languages). I can even recognize accents from a good chunk of LatAm where I'm from.

on that note Warsaw is funny

more Ukrainian/Russian than Polish, especially in the evenings :D

Imagine having gay sex and suddenly you hear drunk Ukrainian guys singing "Soldat" (5'Nizza) from outside the window

@rail_

Ooh!

I do this!

So for me it’s based primarily on the recognition that Indo-European languages have a structure at base that’s similar and that there are a fair few one to one correspondences in these languages that one can just parle and effortless drop them in regardless of la idioma one normally speaks and that non-IE languages are fascinating for the features they have and IE doesn’t like clusivity…

@rail_, I think I've heard someone speaking Vietnamese lately. I guess that answers your question.

@rail_ I also like the subtlety of detecting a local accent (Australian in my case) in the other language.
It boggles my mind that this is possible even without picking the other language.

@rail_ I tend to also do this too, specially when I'm bored in public transit.
