My dog plays tricks like that on me, too. He asks to go outside, then when I get up to open the door he runs away and makes play signals. He learned it from a dog who used to visit us; she'd bark out the window and, as soon as he got up to look, she'd rush in to steal his seat.

I see it as good dialogue between us that we both play tricks on each other, and that they so often end in play signals.
