video games actually come at three price points these days:

$20-30 β€” a video game that costs $20 or $30

$60-70 β€” $60 to $150, depending on how many missing pieces there are

$0 β€” you will be relentlessly punished until you give them at least $500

@saddestrobots yeah as soon as I see it's free to play I know it's going to be a wire mother level unethical gambling psych-experiment and nope out.

@glencoe
Borderlands 3 is free on PS5 right now, but I'm keenly aware of how that's actually like $40 off a $150 game

@saddestrobots @glencoe also like with #PSN+ in the past you can lilely only play it with an acti e subscription.

Claire

@saddestrobots yeah free to play is especially annoying because it's not like you can pay a reasonable price for full functionality it's going to be way more than you would spend on a normal game

DELETED

@saddestrobots $0 - every game has a free demo if you know where to look

@Leonor
it is true that, for a moderate amount of fuss, and possibly the psychic damage of having to know who "empress" is or whatever, you can play most of these things for free

DELETED

@saddestrobots listen the fitgirl empress drama is childs play compared to the shit ive seen the past two years of being Online

also I can pavlov myself by thinking about empress everytime I think about booting up Anno 1800 (a game with a "youve been playing for 16 hours please we knew people would need this" audio recording ask me how I know)

DELETED

@saddestrobots "You played for 8 hours! You should check on your family." for some reason I love games that tell me to go home and be a family

(i made this post out of monumental sympathy for people who can't really afford to get the $20 games on the reg, so they play a $0 game and just put up with the relentless punishment it inflicts on them for not having $500. that one friend who's like "good news! i found some heroin on the side of the road today, and sold it to buy hats for my waifus.")

DELETED

@saddestrobots somehow "I lost it all buying hats for my waifus" is just as silly sounding as "I lost it all betting on the ponies" for something equally as devastating

St Woke of Pronouns

@saddestrobots the difference is that the heroin is enjoyable the whole time!

Claire

@glencoe @saddestrobots they both are just basically poking your dopamine receptors

@saddestrobots I literally had a dream about that last night 😹

i posted this on bluesky and people are trying to Correct Me now

did you know that Stardew Valley is $15? that's less than $20!

Cheerios de Bergerac

@saddestrobots classic nerd behavior, not seeing a joke as a joke even if it's true

Cheerios de Bergerac

@saddestrobots I will say though, you brought this upon yourself by posting on bluesky

Cheerios de Bergerac

@saddestrobots Aggressive nerds responding to you with "Um akshually" on mastodon dot com; Vile, contemptible, should be banished from your sight immediately

Those same nerds on Bluesky: Deserved, a penance for your sins, your cross to bear, may god have mercy on your soul

Cyborus

@saddestrobots@jorts.horse there is the occasional $0 that's just a little toy someone made that's actually one of the best games you've ever played

@saddestrobots it's very telling that since the transition to a $70 price point all of the big name bangers recently have been mid-budget or indie titles costing at most a little over half that. Lethal Company, Palworld, Helldivers 2, Manor Lords now. Folks don't want to spend $70 on a video game
Kevin Karhan :verified:

@saddestrobots Basically at this point we only got 3 tiers:

-

"#PayToWin" or as I call it, #PayToLoose because it's basically "not legally #gambling" but without any chance of actual winnings that one could cashout.

-

"#HonestMerchant" aka. #IndieTitles priced reasonable and offering way more fun.

-

"#AAA" which ranges from "$60 for a 6hr interactive movie" to "#DLC Shitshow" like #TheSims...

""$0"" me @ my Bejeweled Classic APK that hasn't been given network permissions since it was installed gave me ONE God-Tier run of "794,680", before cutting me down to less than 5k-20k, resetting every hour. After a phone update that required a restart it gave me another 794,680 and kept on it's bs.

@saddestrobots I would love to see more FLOSS games!

catraxx

@saddestrobots

$1-5 - a game that has way too much content for the price and makes you feel kinda sorry for the devs when you see that you spend 400h in it.

@saddestrobots
This is what annoys me about game sites now.
I don't have a games console, so don't buy expensive games, but I do play games on my laptop.
I much prefer to buy a game outright and that's it, rather than a stupid app that has a gazillion adverts every other level and I have to buy tokens to get past level 5.
