I'm really proud of the new @pixelfed app Discover screen!

We operate a service called beagle that will help pixelfed servers of all sizes discover content.

This means, no matter what Pixelfed server you're signed into, you will have a full Discover page!

@laxla @pixelfed Nope, its only a cache of status urls and account urls for now. We will open source it!

I am considering a better long term solution, so feel free to reply back with any suggestions!

Laxystem (Masto/Glitch)

@dansup @pixelfed decentralize it. Replace it with a "recommended" thingy on every instance. Simple as that.

Would avoid centralization at any cost.

@laxla @pixelfed It's not that easy, the whole point of beagle is to get a list of status urls that your instance can fetch

Decentralizing it doesn't really accomplish anything, other than the complexity of consensus algorithms and spam/abuse.

Laxystem (Masto/Glitch)

@dansup @pixelfed but, the entire point of fedi is to be decentralized.

Laxystem (Masto/Glitch)

@dansup @pixelfed if you need it maybe consider your social network itself is badly designed for your goal - working without an algorithm knowing all posts in existence

@dansup @pixelfed I mean of course it's hard but like we do know it's possible

@laxla @pixelfed What you failed to see was the fact that beagle will be open sourced, and anyone can share their beagle endpoint with any pixelfed server (and eventually you'll be able to set it in the app)

Decentralizing the service adds more complexity than is required, and while it is centralized, you and others will have the option to run you own beagle instance.

@dansup @pixelfed that's what I meant by decentralized - something that you, as the developer, cannot influence.

But: I didn't know you were gonna do that. You didn't say that. Your stuff isn't FOSS even though they're in active usage! That's where I'm coming from: why don't you involve the community from the beginning?

@dansup @pixelfed it looks great and I’m glad to hear there are privacy features in place - shows you have the community in mind! You’re building wonderful things, thank you for the time you put in

@dansup @pixelfed please add a search bar or button to the discover page. The overall intention of "trying to find new content" makes them make sense together

@dansup @pixelfed can you fix up the different margins to be equal? It's a bit messy. The vertical and horizontal margins are different, but even the two horizontal margins are different from each other.

@dansup @pixelfed and? The margins make it look uneasy and busy, the type of element it is shouldn't dictate visual flow. In a design system everything should be related so you have a coherent and steady flow that's easy on the eyes.

The matrix frontend cinny.in for example is a great example. Here's a nice blogpost about using space in design;

@dansup @pixelfed that's cool, that was my issue with peertube, which is you get completely different content depending on the server you use and you can only discover people from other servers by manual search

@dansup when can we expect the app to be available in stores officially? I have a couple of friends who love the idea of Pixelfed and would gladly use it already as an app 😎
