Once the Left struggled for liberty, equality and fraternity, but after having abolished many oppressive laws, it was evident that liberty tends to produce inequality and disharmony. The Left fractured into a minority who prized liberty most — libertarians — and the majority who preferred the other two principles.

With the Left generally embracing government power, conservatives (in the Anglo tradition) became the defenders of freedoms, ancient and newly-won.
