@neauoire southeast alaska is so lovely this time of year

Devine Lu Linvega replied to clarity

@clarity I'm certain it will be once we make it out of this thick fogbank, we can berely see further than Pino's bow.

Have you ever been to LeConte glacier? We were thinking of heading there for a while : )

clarity flowers replied to Devine Lu Linvega

@neauoire I haven't!! Other than the ferries between Juneau Sitka and Ketchikan I've never really had the chance to boat around the channels. Really envious of yall tbh!

Devine Lu Linvega replied to clarity

@clarity we'll try to take some pictures!

@tty It's been too fast! We came across lots of places that we have made a mental note of to return to and explore properly. We've been feeling a bit hurried by the weather because it's often favorable to go up, and we just can't resist wanting to sail north, so we cast off even tho we might be in places that we like.

We don't have a strict plan, but we'll go meet some glaciers and things, but by end of july, we'll start making our way down to spend time in these nice places we found.

Day 37: Ketchikan, AK -> Snug Cove, Prince Of Wales Island

Devine Lu Linvega replied to Andres

@monkey1 relatively to our other recent passages, it's kind of a short day, only 7 hours!

Andres Moreno replied to Devine Lu Linvega

@neauoire

Really enjoying following your journey. I try to map it for myself and imagine what you might be seeing.

My own trip of sorts.

Devine Lu Linvega replied to Andres

@monkey1 I'm glad to hear, I'm looking forward to talking it over coffee when we get back down

Day 39: Snug Cove, Prince Of Wales Island -> Ratz, Prince Of Wales Island

Pino anchored alone in a bay, we're always alone. The days often get covered around noon.

Have we gone backward? Yes, yesterday skirted a bit too close to type III fun.

A large mountain right by where the boat is anchored.
Devine Lu Linvega replied to Andres

@monkey1 yep, just south of Baird Glacier. South east of the island.

Andres Moreno replied to Devine Lu Linvega

@neauoire

It has been fascinating to follow your progress on a map. The pics you post make the exercise a bit more tangible.

@neauoire well done to "snug cove" for having the most cozy sounding place name ever.

Janis replied to Devine Lu Linvega

@neauoire Is that black line a preventer?

Devine Lu Linvega replied to Janis

@lobidu yup, it's red on the other side.

Janis replied to Devine Lu Linvega

@neauoire Do you have a mount point further to the stern for heavier winds? Because it looks to me like it may be too far aft, making the angle between boom and preventer too sharp, which increases the load the preventer takes exponentially – like what happened during the Platino accident in NZ (excuse me if I'm mistaken, I have literally zero experience sailing, just passing on what I learned in training)

Devine Lu Linvega replied to Janis

@lobidu that might be a trick of the picture because the preventer line does a pretty big arc. The preventer doesn't really have that much load, it never takes a jibe blow because it keeps the main tight in its place.

@tty It's to sail downwind and extend the jib out, here's a better angle:
