@Gargron I think part of this is because you have mastodon.social set up to look very similar to Twitter, unlike some other servers.

From personal experience, I was on mastodon.xyz for a bit and... it was fine but the UX wasn't to my liking (looked a lot like TwitDeck, which is too busy for me).
