What would it take for #Mastodon to become that political organizing app instead of Twitter or Threads? Isn’t it a much more logical place?

Anybody trying to make it so? Any reasons that speak against?

Well the fact that Mastodon social (the biggest and default server) cites oppostion to genocide as holocaust inversionβ€” for starters. The censorship is off the hook here. Also the way servers can defederate, hide profiles, block individuals without reason would break networks, real quick. I could not advise against organizing on here more it is full of self-deputized cops.

"Anybody trying to make it so?"
Yeah me. As a #developer I find the Fediverse SO MUCH more powerful, due to all the tools it has for #programmers that don't even exist at the other places. I did a talk about this recently, have just got my hands on the recording this week, and will be dropping it soon (I'm just getting some times and looking into if the organiser could add some chapters to the video for us - if not then at least I'll have the times).

@J12t I know that a lot of minorities felt uncomfortable here and moved on. If people don't find this safe space to talk, they're not going to organise here

@kaffiene there is a misunderstanding here. #mastodon is not a space, safe or otherwise. It’s a piece of software. But this piece of software allows you and your community to create a space that’s safe for you according to just about any criteria you care for. It not pre made … but that’s an opportunity, not a bug imho.

@J12t no misunderstanding. I'm perfectly aware of what Mastodon is.
Actually it was responses like this That were instrumental in a lot of the NZ Māori community moving on

@kaffiene then I’m baffled and if you were willing to explain, perhaps I can be unbaffled.

@J12t As I recall the gist of it was that Mastodon made it easier for trolls to target minorities cf Twitter. And when people complained about it they were met with technocratic answers about how it was impossible for technical geek reasons and ignoring people's actual experiences.
I found an article talking about it fastcompany.com/90817452/can-m
But I have to disclaim: these are not my experiences so I'm not the best placed to explain them

@J12t i think most people and organizations are lazy and NEED algorithms....

@J12t I truly miss the way Twitter 1.0 helped activists organize and get visibility for their causes.

Every time I mention the Fediverse / Mastodon to my old friends that used to organize on there, they immediately ask β€œwhat’s that?”

Apparently some that tried to use Mastodon were turned off by the signup process. The network effect (lack of our community on here) was another problem for adoption.

I want to make it my mission to get them on here - and encourage their friends to join too

@J12t I was thinking of doing this:
(1) creating a simple step-by-step guide on my website (or custom URL), explaining what the Fediverse is, how to join + highlighting advantages over other platforms
(2) approaching interesting women / POC who are active on Mastodon and asking them if I can add them to a public Notion board of β€œpeople of Note” on the Fediverse -> making it easy to instantly find people to follow
(3) approaching 5 friends who are activists and offering a tutorial of how to join

@J12t Mastodon (and fediverse in general) is not capable of being like Twitter. On Twitter, the entire political and social spectrum is able to express their views and communicate with all the Twitter users, as long as they follow the rules of Twitter which are clear and minimal.
On the other hand we have Mastodon, where admins are blocking other instances over the most trivial disagreements. All because they own the server so they get to choose what to do with it.
This creates an environment where people either have to censor themselves or be in an instance that is probably blocked by a lot of other instances.
