@Edent The banks seem to think they can "technology" their way out of social problems.

Social problems (e.g. social engineering), require social solutions.

Sorry shareholders, that means keeping bank branches open, for longer, so people can meet, in person.

No bank is going to keep its branches open 24/7. So all a scammer needs to do it attack at a time you're awake but your nearest branch is closed.

@Edent Nope, but it might mean the person needs to be savvy enough to say: "Well, give me a reference number, and I'll take that to the bank when they're next open."

They don't need to be open 24/7, but they need to be open at times people can reasonably get there. Business hours are a minimum standard here.

A lot are online-only, or so-called "digital" banks. These need to be phased out -- a bricks-and-mortar presence and accessible opening hours would very quickly stamp out this sort of scam.

But fraud happens 24/7!
I want to be notified the minute my card is used without authorisation. If I have to wait until the morning, that just gives scammers more time to exploit me.

@Edent Agreed, contact you straight away… put a freeze on the accounts… then sort it out when the bank opens … you can meet in person, verify your identity … with someone who likely has seen you at the bank before thus already knows you somewhat.

The problem here is they think "the app" can replace "the branch". It can't.

The scam works because neither person knows the other … there's a computerised firewall in between, that makes identity fraud easy.
