Me: "hey, your FOSS project is cool, do you have a group?"
them: "Yes, on Discord... wait, where did you go?"

There were updates made to fix that, and the devs talk to each other.

@Menel @Jenetrix Me and my bf are self hosting the 25 year old protocol and itโ€™s pretty good so far. Conversations, the Android client just got an update to Material 3, so it actually feels modern too. The only thing I miss from using Fluffychat is all my neofoxes :neofox_cry:

kuriko

@Jenetrix โ€œthis is why we use the number stations technique and just post encrypted messages as numbers on public timelines and decrypt with the one time pad that we exchange in person once every month

// please do not try to crack that i either keymashed for three seconds (or you donโ€™t have the one time pad for it :3)

vxo

@kuriko @Jenetrix it needs a spooky fading interval signal

kuriko

@vxo @Jenetrix this hits me so hard :blobcatnotlikethisgoogly: bravo

vxo

@kuriko @Jenetrix I still remember when I made that it was because I heard it echoing from a weak distant BGM speaker somewhere and thought, yes, this would be a perfect numbers station interval signal just barely peeking out of the airwaves

@Jenetrix >faang

amazon and netflix have a chat now? :floofWoozy:

Riedler

@Jenetrix didn't signal stop requiring phone numbers?

๐“™๐“ฎ๐“ท๐“ฎ๐“ฝ๐“ป๐“ฒ๐”

@riedler still need one to sign up but you no longer need to share it to add people and now you can hide it to other users

ljยทrk

@riedler @Jenetrix Not as such, yet. You can find each other w/o sharing your number and you can disable being found by number. So, privacy wise against 3rd parties you can completely decouple your phone number from your Signal account.

Currently a number is still required for the first time setup, although this requirement is likely getting dropped in the future now that the critical dependencies are gone.

@Jenetrix I've written telegram support multiple times because my newly bought sim card number was apparently already in use or something

no answer to this day

alina ๐ŸŒธ

@MiaWinter@tech.lgbt @Jenetrix@tech.lgbt telegram support is basically non-existent. if they didn't answer you within 24h after your first message โ€“ they probably never will.

i sure hope this will improve once they start making a profit and can focus on users instead of staying afloat...

skze

@MiaWinter @Jenetrix when i accidentally deleted the telegram app and installed it again it kept telling me that it sent the code to โ€œtelegram on my other deviceโ€ but i had no other device. it took me like 2 weeks to figure out a solution to this one (install telegram on a second phone without a sim card, try to sign in, and it will actually send you an sms, and then from the second phone you can verify the first)

k

@MiaWinter @Jenetrix oh my god this reminds me of this awful pop up (someone already used the number, and I can't do anything about it)

Jima :Compromise_bi_flag:

@MiaWinter @Jenetrix A less-well-understood address depletion scenario. ๐Ÿ˜”

Erethon

@Jenetrix I'll play devils advocate here and point two things. Encryption for public chatrooms doesn't provide any benefits, it's a public room already. Secondly, e2ee solutions if you don't verify identities/keys out of band provide no security either, you might be being mitm-ed and you won't know it unless you verify each other.

So it's important to note what your usecase is.

Noble :frostbite:

@Jenetrix i hate how i can tell which apps you're talking about without anyone naming them
(i use $20 profile microtransactions and client with optional encryption

MMO hub city map-wide chat is pretty durable tho

I have an XMPP, which I would love to use more, but the provider I found and used I quickly discovered periodically goes down. I have considered self hosting, but also like. it'd be nice if I could find a provider that doesn't do that :blobcatmeltcry: why does this have to be hard

bird(ie) ๐Ÿฆโ€:v_lesbian:

@Jenetrix
The friend I signed up to communicate with in the first place saw all this and was like, "omg just get signal". This sounds more and more tempting

magnetizedfreckles

@bugbird @Jenetrix session is better than signal imo. and it doesnโ€™t require a phone number (or any personal information) and this is awesome. plus it just works

@Jenetrix "35 year old protocol lacking a lot of QOL features that people still use for some reason"

I think this list illustrates the reason pretty well... I'll make my own QoL features by adding a self-hosted bouncer like ZNC.

tef
@Jenetrix >that people still use for some reason

well, all you've gotta do is look at the rest of the list (not that every OMEMO issue I've had hasn't been solvable by deleting fingerprints to force-start a new session on gajim at least, but)

@Jenetrix I'd like to see a study on happiness of users with their preferred platform/protocol and their average happiness in life including reasons they mention.

Oooh, a guessing game. Let's see ...

-Facebook messenger
-Hangouts
-Skype?
-WhatsApp
-dunno this one
-Telegram
-Signal
-SMS
-Email?
-matrix

So how'd I do?

@Jenetrix what's the encrypted faang client that is likely backdoored?

Clygro
@Jenetrix 25 year old and unable to decrypt message are my preferred ones, should've mentioned that most of those are centralised too, which makes them worse
