@dansup @Chocobozzz Like TikTok and Insta-Reels, just (hopefully) without spam? Nice.

(and YouTube Shorts of course)

@anopka @dansup @Chocobozzz Would be curious how well this could work in terms of both necessary storage and finance ability on the instance side (you'd hardly notice where the next clip gets loaded from after all).

Would love to see the use of something like IPFS here. Also @librecast, perhaps. The video torrent backend PeerTube used to have is a privacy nightmare after all.

@Natanox @anopka @dansup @Chocobozzz to illustrate the multicast concept and how it can reduce the resource load I recommend this Introductory talk. It covers IoT updates but illustrates the idea.

Although I do caveat that while multicast can help, you are better designing with multicast in mind in the first place.

As we found when we did a unicast version of the updater to test unicast v multicast.

@dansup @Chocobozzz I'm a bit conflicted about integrating short videos because I'm pretty sure IG reels & YT shorts only exist to compete with tiktok. But stories also exist for similar reason and I'm fine with that, so maybe an optional integration with every service could be nice. And if PT has shorts then federation would be absolutely amazing.

@norbipeti I kinda feel the same.

In my mind, at the moment, short videos == mostly trash (content/production).

I understand that nowadays everything must be fast and furious and nobody has time to check longer content than a few seconds (sadly), but this to me seems to be a trend of quantity over quality.
I guess that this is another consequence of the massive increase in content being posted online.

I don't like the average quality of short videos, and I don't like how people are consuming them.
On the other hand, if I share a snippet of my long videos in shorts or reels, they get easily 10 times more the reach of the original one.

Maybe I'm just conflicted about short videos in general 😄

@norbipeti @dansup @Chocobozzz Isn't seeking to replace / be familiar to TikTok as well a feature not a bug?

@vitriolix @dansup @Chocobozzz I mean I have no problem with a fedi alternative to tiktok being very similar, I'm just not sure we need to integrate it into other fedi services (with a separate "tiktok mode" added to PeerTube etc.). But maybe it'd be fine.

Chocobozzz

@dansup No problem for that don't hesitate to tell me if you need us to change our federated objects on peertube side :)

@Chocobozzz @dansup oh thats amazing to hear you are down for this collaboration. I wonder if it would make sense to open a thread on #SocialHub to work out what interoperability would look like? @smallcircles what do you think of a short form video fediverse working group?

smallcircles (Humanity Now 🕊)

@liaizon @Chocobozzz @dansup

Indeed, great to see collab like that coming about! SocialHub can sure facilitate a working group with dedicated forum space for y'all to give that hands and feet.

grant :blobcatgoogly:

@dansup @Chocobozzz I already have a couple short form videos uploaded to my #PeerTube instance to test compatibility with

@sc07_shorts / sc07.tv/c/sc07_shorts

DELETED

@dansup @Chocobozzz And if this could be timed with the TikTok Ban bill that'd be fantastic for the fediverse.

@dansup
What about getting addicted? I'm a bit concerned about this, because I had to fight a terrible addiction to YouTube (in general, but also shorts) a year or so ago. Twice.

dansup

@ilikecats We're aware of this issue, and working on a few potential solutions.

That's great to hear!
The most important for me is having a scroll bar or some way to control the video (rewind/advance).

The way Shorts is implemented, if you want to know how a video ends, you need to wait, and if you've lost a frame you have to start over and wait.

Watching in a passive way like this, at least for me, contributes to this "accept whatever comes" behavior and to doomscrolling.
