@lisamelton can you help this poll below on the thread which is about the fediverse reach the masses please #mastoadmin #mastodon

@Ric i want brands away from anything human

Tealk

@Ric what does big brands coming into the fediverse mean?
- Do they write their own software? e.g. threads
- Do they create their own instance?
- Do they create an account somewhere?

:mastodon: Ric Harvey πŸ‡ͺπŸ‡ΊπŸŒπŸ’š

@Tealk I was thinking more like coke or apple having their corporate accounts on the fediverse and interacting with customers maybe having their support teams connected up much like they do on Twitter (still not calling it x)

Tealk

@Ric ok then the answer is quite clear, let them all come, the Fediverse will only benefit from it

:mastodon: Ric Harvey πŸ‡ͺπŸ‡ΊπŸŒπŸ’š

@Tealk personally of like to be able to moan to customer support via the fediverse. 🀣

Tealk

@Ric i can understand that i would also like to have a public contact point for some issues

Neil Brown

@Ric Boosted, and I'm in the "no, thank you!" camp, with "I'd just block them" as a fall back :)

:mastodon: Ric Harvey πŸ‡ͺπŸ‡ΊπŸŒπŸ’š

@neil Thank you, yep I think some I would definitely block, however I do miss being able to complain to customer service sometimes like on the old bird site.

Neil Brown

@Ric Oh, different people will have different views.

If a "big brand" were to set up their own instance, I'd feel more positively than if they used someone else's instance, I think, but I'd probably still block anyway if they came across my timeline.

guildz

@Ric hachyderm I think is one of the few instances I have seen with formal corporate accounts and policies - something to look into if you want some guidance on how it has been done

@Ric it’s just another user, it really doesn’t change things for me.
If I don’t like their posts or see them too much I can just individually block them, just like I do on any other platform.

@Ric
maybe they could find a way to not be so repetitiously annoying. AI maybe. eh, I'll block them but the masses won't and will help pay bandwidth bills. so idc, same same

@Ric
If they want to try… ok.

If they can survive here (in place where people are not a product to sell), great.

Do I need them? Not really.

Dan Neuman

@Ric It's not the same as seeing an ad, though. I only see the stuff the people I follow boost, so if they don't boost major brands, I won't see them. But I would like to follow a few brands I like. Store sales, new products, tips and tricks, etc.

James Wells

@Ric
As long as they are truly contributing to the community I will have no issues, but once they start advertising / spamming my timeline I will simply fediblock them.

mosttoast

@Ric depends on the brand and their reasons for joining. if they come to post a deluge of shit and adverts, blocking is the only meaningful interaction. Meanwhile some brands are on here like @opencage who mostly post fascinating geo and map facts, and is worth a follow on those alone.

anubis2814
@Ric I'll just fediblock them.(can't vote on this platform). I don't think big brands coming here will boost our user base at all, unless they pay influencers to come here and push their followers to come here as well. No one joins a social media platform because their favorite brands are there.
Marcos Dione

@Ric it's more like 'maybe #1, maybe #3'

:mastodon: Ric Harvey πŸ‡ͺπŸ‡ΊπŸŒπŸ’š

@mdione I think the same to be honest, it’s really down to how the brands behave and their ethics

Meh as a Service

@Ric I think it would be very good for brands to be present here for communication and updates. Shouting at brands on social media has been the most efficient way of resolving problems for a long time now, whether you like it or not.

I think it would be very bad if brands try to run some garbage astroturf campaigns, incite hashtag/boost spam, or otherwise insert themselves without invitation.

I think when people talk about hating brands they mostly imagine the second scenario. I think it's entirely possible to have one without the other.

And the biggest risk to that not happening is large instances. Because they can, will and have previously decided on everyone's behalf what is and isn't acceptable. So if you're voting "hell no" while being on .social, perhaps consider fixing that.

@virtulis I suppose the power to move account helps people here and I totally agree with your insightful comments about not doing hashtag boosts and stuff. I think competitions could be fun also.

Octale

@Ric there are exactly 0 examples of anything going β€œmainstream” and it being better on the other side.

FoolishOwl

@Ric The fundamental point is to have a channel of communication that is not controlled by capitalism. Almost every other channel is.

dragonfrog, hungry waffle

@Ric

It depends on the "big brand" in question, I think.

If news organizations would set up their own fedi instances, encouraging individual employees to make their own professional accounts there, that would be awesome - I'd be more easily able to find reporters and analysts covering things I'm interested in.

If Nike or BMW make an account on dot social and have their social media team manage it along with all their other ad accounts - meh. Do not care.

Dr Ro Smith

@Ric It's fine, but I don't care about the mainstream adopting.

:mastodon: Ric Harvey πŸ‡ͺπŸ‡ΊπŸŒπŸ’š

@Rhube there is that point, I guess I was thinking more about my wider friendship group using the platform.

Dr Ro Smith

@Ric Sure, but I don't think of that as the mainstream. The mainstream is my parents and a bunch of Daily Mail readers flooding the place and that's the point at which Twitter started going down hill for me. My friends were already there.

:mastodon: Ric Harvey πŸ‡ͺπŸ‡ΊπŸŒπŸ’š

@Rhube yeah the daily mail and their followers would get fediblocked by me lol

Hisham

@Ric Fediverse is like email. Of course it's fine that big brands have it.
