Blackbox algos have no place here. Transparent algos can be fine. Curation doesn't always mean surveillance, sometimes it can be handled clientside. There are other techniques.

The thing about TikTok is, one would be mistaken to think its selling point is shortform vertical videos. It's not. Vine failed, YouTube Shorts are unpopular, the format isn't the thing TikTok gets right. What they get right is their algorithm.
