"Crap! HDMI Forum Rejects Open-Source HDMI 2.1 Driver Support Sought By AMD"

"The HDMI Forum has rejected our proposal unfortunately. At this time an open source HDMI 2.1 implementation is not possible without running afoul of the HDMI Forum requirements."

Friendship ended with HDMI. Now DisplayPort is my best friend.

Photo of display port cord being plugged into a laptop.

@frameworkcomputer Yeah. In one day I became a display port person.

DELETED

@frameworkcomputer I mean display port has USB c so it was always better

@frameworkcomputer Can y'all make a note that tell the situation if someone tries to buy HDMI? Sorry I might be a bit extreme. XD

wraptile

@frameworkcomputer the world has been robbed of better display experience when HDMI won over display port πŸ™‚β€β†•οΈ

Time to turn the tides!

@frameworkcomputer Good, you'll save yourself the royalty costs and hardware for conversion from USB-C alt mode.

@frameworkcomputer I don't understand why more devices haven't adopted DisplayPort. Does more stuff while costing nothing in fees

Sander van Kasteel

@rogueren @frameworkcomputer yes but... My uneducated guess is that the HDMI forum probably ""partnered"" up with some vendors during the =< HDMI 1.3 era.

That way HDMI became the "defacto" standard for consumer and procusomer equipment.

So if a vendor nowadays would implement DisplayPort instead of HDMI, the equipment would be returned left right and center by consumers due to not being able to hook it up :(

Sander van Kasteel

@rogueren @frameworkcomputer That only works if the receiving device is capable of handling DisplayPort signals.

Or the transmitting device is capable of outputting HDMI signals over DisplayPort.

At least in the case of passive cables.

In the case of active cables, yes it would be possible, but active cables are quite expensive, about ~ 10 USD vs ~ 2 USD for a manufacturer.

Not to mention, the licensing fee to the HDMI forum in the case of passive cables.

@rogueren @frameworkcomputer And don't get me wrong, I'm not trying to defend the manufacturers here.

But for them there is no incentive to migrate to DP compared to HDMI. Other than more costs.

Now the story becomes a whole different story if the HDMI forum increases their licensing fees.

@frameworkcomputer Time to do a piracy! :blobfoxpirate: (Adopting DisplayPort)

@frameworkcomputer so when are you going to announce your line of non-β€œsmart” TVs that include Display Port? πŸ‘€

This is why I prefer displayport.

@frameworkcomputer Very sad to see. I would sooner see DP take over.
