@ilyess They really should have called usernames “invite codes” or similar; that would have avoided a lot of confusion.
One thing I hope we’ll get implemented soon is the ability to override someone’s profile name and picture in the app because if they disable discoverability by phone number, you lose the only way to do it now—by linking the Signal contact to a system contact. (Apparently they’re already working on the name change.)

@LostNetizen I was trying to find a better name for usernames but I think you just hit the nail on the head. “Invite codes” is exactly what they are, and they should’ve been called so. Anyway, too late now I guess.

Yeah I saw that on the forum. I get wanting the ability to override a contact’s profile name, but why the picture?

@ilyess Right now I have a photo of myself in my profile but once I start giving out a username to more people, including those who don't know me personally, I'll change not only my profile name but also the picture to something that doesn't identify me. Friends and family will probably still want to see my face, so they'll need a way to override that.
