@ilyess I think I'm starting to feel the FOMO, but I already missed out. 🥲️

ilyess

@mikael you can always pick a slight variation. Maybe add or change a digit?

@ilyess If you want to maintain your privacy, a username should not be something meaningful to you. That’s why my username is a random string of characters. This way, I can also share it publicly without worrying about “losing” it if I get spam and decide to change it. I’d encourage everyone to consider random, disposable usernames.

ilyess

@freeagent Absolutely! That’s the only logical reasoning. Maybe most of us will end up with an actually disposable username once we fully realize how irrelevant it is after the initial connection. You’re way ahead of all of us! :D

@ilyess I think the way they've implemented usernames is near perfect. It's super easy to get any username you want if that's important to you as long as you don't care about the numbers on the end. And being completely disposable means you don't have to worry about protecting it.

@jp Yeah, really props to Signal for this implementation. The naming could’ve been better IMO but other than that, it’s flawless. It took them forever but I do appreciate how much thought and careful design went into it.

LostNetizen

@ilyess They really should have called usernames “invite codes” or similar; that would have avoided a lot of confusion.
One thing I hope we’ll get implemented soon is the ability to override someone’s profile name and picture in the app because if they disable discoverability by phone number, you lose the only way to do it now—by linking the Signal contact to a system contact. (Apparently they’re already working on the name change.)

ilyess

@LostNetizen I was trying to find a better name for usernames but I think you just hit the nail on the head. “Invite codes” is exactly what they are, and they should’ve been called so. Anyway, too late now I guess.

Yeah I saw that on the forum. I get wanting the ability to override a contact’s profile name, but why the picture?

LostNetizen

@ilyess Right now I have a photo of myself in my profile but once I start giving out a username to more people, including those who don't know me personally, I'll change not only my profile name but also the picture to something that doesn't identify me. Friends and family will probably still want to see my face, so they'll need a way to override that.
