You might have noticed that Pixelfed only sends account verification and password reset emails.

Or the lack of real-time notifications and those familiar notification sounds.

And how you have to refresh the timeline to see new posts.

These small details are intentional.

If we did implement these un-healthy aspects, we would be no better than Instagram #pixelfed #beEthical

@pixelfed I fully applaud that approach. They are 'humane tech best-practices' you might say. There's so many software around that strew real-time notifications around like candy and becoming 'distraction-ware' that way.

@pixelfed Thats good design. I think making the apps less addicting is important. Though sometimes it might have to be a balancing act. Providing users with features they expect, even if they have some addicting aspects to it.

Stories is a good example, it forces users to feel the need to check in daily, but also makes users feel safer sharing content that won't stick around forever.

Maybe the balance is for stories to expire every 3 days?

@pixelfed I think DMs could be a notification that could be pushed, as users might use pixelfed to keep in touch with family and may want to know when they get DM'd.

Or maybe make it an option?

pixelfed

@geotechland DMs are a notification! The big difference is that we only show you DM notifications from people you follow unless you navigate to the Settings -> Privacy and check "Receive Direct Messages from anyone"

@pixelfed I hadn't noticed, which shows it's working. Thank you. 😊

@pixelfed What about making them opt in? Some may still want to just keep one place to get all updates, and email could be one of them.
