List of Instances that have / had spam

I've moved the collaborative list here

Me and a team of people will constantly monitor the spam situation, add instances to the list that have fallen victim to the spam and kick instances off the list when they're freed again.

I've worked on this all day - I hope it'll help some admins struggling to find a solution!

If you're an admin of the spam instances:
Take a look at the post this is a reply to in order to stop the spam on your instance.

Is the Spam Over?

No

Have a great day!

@ErikUden Thank you for keeping us updated! 🀩

@ErikUden I notice you advise defederating from these instances (whilst correctly pointing out that doing so irreversibly severs existing follow relationships)

May I suggest advising to β€˜limit’ affected instances instead. This will stop the problem whilst keeping existing follow relationships, and can therefore be fully reversed.

@ErikUden

Hi, I just suspended all reported accounts. Thank you!

Erik Uden πŸ¦£πŸ‘:coffefied:

@admin okay, I will remove you from the list immediately! Thank you.

Have you blocked their E-Mail Domain too?

atmx

@ErikUden Yes, I'm also setting up the email domain list.

Erik Uden πŸ¦£πŸ‘:coffefied:

@admin wonderful! Thank you for taking care of this, we also had countless of accounts sign up on troet.cafe and were defederated from left and right. I hope all can be fixed now in the coming days...!!

@ErikUden @fberger @eljefe @alfredveninga @admin @matt @slomin

Thanks for the notice, the issue was solved, the accounts banned and registration now requires manual approbation

Sorry for the inconvenience!

@ErikUden Spam *has not* ended yet. I just got another spam mention now.

Also, I recommend you silence affected instances instead of suspend. It does stop mentions from those spam accounts and keeps other, normal connections intact.

BTW, my current strategy is:
- silence instances with non-spam connections
- suspend instances without any non-spam connections

This works well for me.

@ErikUden G'day @Curator and still another collection of instances to blacklist. @fberger

@Nihtgenga @ErikUden @Curator Thanks for reporting, already suspended all fishy users. I'll check further actions asap when back in office this evening.

@ErikUden I'm getting them from

- social.territorisostenibili.org
- mastodon.mg
- drobny.blog
- kasei.ski
- pawoo.net
- brokenhedge.org

as well.

@ErikUden Mitigations are now in place on rettiwtkcuf.social and all known spam accounts are suspended.

Thanks for the heads up!

@ErikUden some additions, from hashtag searching and looking at their local timelines:
* adforward.org
* devsrv.farhan.codes
* game-tecx.de
* groupsebelah.com
* kokuusa.club
* masto.ukrainedao.love
* mastodon.saarland
* motern.media
* phyrexia.ru
* sensitive.hostdon.ne.jp
* thewiring.com

Erik Uden πŸ¦£πŸ‘:coffefied:

@pronoiac will be taken into account. I'm working on a new list because our character limit of 4000 is too small for the amount of instances!

James Young

@ErikUden ugh! Is a daily post, edited over the course of a day, viable?

Erik Uden πŸ¦£πŸ‘:coffefied:

@pronoiac well, maybe, but until I figure that out here are the domains I couldn't include on the previous list:

kalmar.social
redwings.social
mastodon-ero.xyz
wulf.social
graeber.social
brokenhedge.org
wpmastodon.es
9kb.me
mastodon.london
brians.town

@ErikUden it might be good to get these into a blocklist, like @oliphant 's, maybe? Some possible issues:
* removing them from the list, and broadcasting that
* I'd prefer a public comment like "2024-02-17 - bot spam", and not obscuring the hostname by default
* also, geez, this has only been going a day?! It feels longer

@ErikUden @fberger Feel free to unblock me. Social.uggs.io

One account server with disabled regs.

funbaker

@ErikUden remember spamhaus, spamcop etc.?

There should be an equivalent for ActivityPub.

Erik Uden πŸ¦£πŸ‘:coffefied:

@funbaker maybe we can collaborate with Spamhaus...! The Fediverse is important enough haha.

:blobcatverified2:
@ErikUden @funbaker Not even a tiny bit would get me into building such a infrastrucutre! We should learn out of the issues with Mailservers and not do the same mistakes. The bad space is the perfect example of how wrong it could get within fediverse
funbaker

@ErikUden well, I certainly didn't expect this kind of negativity which is occuring here now.

funbaker

@ErikUden I assume that those people are just confusing spam with hatespeech, and thus should be ignored, and also those two things must continue to be handled completely separate.

:blobcatverified2:
@funbaker @ErikUden sorry, i apologize for the somewhat aggressive tone. Altho i still stand behind what i say.
Look, who decides what Spam is?
Objectively one could define mutual aid as Spam. I dont think that there should be a central Authority which defines a List.
Id rather improve tooling, like out of the 3 main software 2 can handle Spam pretty well just Mastodon cant.

@funbaker @ErikUden RBLs were never a reliable source of information. It was usually one dude power tripping and extorting money for delisting.

If the fediblock crowd found out about the second part they may have a viable, if unethical, business model.
