I love the fediverse. It has challenges, sure. But everything does. At least here I feel at home. Thanks, all.

If I was a better web developer today I'd be making an ActivityPub-compatible Bandcamp clone *in which you can pay artists directly for downloads* while sharing clips and optional "what I'm listening to" posts across the Fediverse. I'd call it something snappy like "QuarterNotes" or "FediAmp". If I was a better web developer.

@vkc That sounds awesome. The wonderful #TheSixtyOne was the best online music radio site Iโve ever used before it died a decade ago, and it allowed you to tip artists via tokens and to listen to other usersโ favourite songs to discover new music. I hope somebody builds something similar some day! https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Thesixtyone

So apparently some folks are frustrated with me for saying this thing about suggesting app alternatives when someone talks about a bug. It's bad enough to where I got contact form submissions about it. ๐ So just to be clear, I'm not suggesting here that I don't want anyone suggesting app alternatives ever. I... didn't think I'd have to say that but here we are. Reference toot: https://mspsocial.net/@vkc/110568850945493035

The thing I'm saying is that when a user is *actively dealing with a bug in a project*, chiming in with "try other software" is not an effective strategy. If I say "I found an unworkable bug, who's got alternatives?", that's a great place to chime in. If I say "anyone know how to fix bug" and you come in with *anything other than a fix*, it's not super helpful. This is a courtesy that many on the internet lack, I know. But still, I'm going to mention it.

Ada Lovelace was arguably the first computer programmer, but that's certainly debatable from a "what counts as a computer". https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ada_Lovelace Less debatable is the role women played in shaping the entire culture of computer programming in the earliest eras of the field. Between human computers & cryptography, right through to the first modern programmers. Do yourself a favor and look up the term "kilogirl". Women invented computer programming.

For a while now, Linux Mint has been the "flagship Linux" we've been waiting for. But it's hard to recognize that because algorithmic social media rewards disruptive distro-hopping over sane and subtle defaults.
vkc // Veronica Explains
I might make a video expanding on this, but I think it's safe to consider Mint in the top tier of "recommendables" at this point. And not just for beginners- it's really a logical choice for a ton of people.

Free idea I'm throwing into the #Fediverse: A tool that generates a node map - or even just a word cloud - of what instances I'm following and what instances follow me. It'd be really nice to know (i.e. data) what percentage of my feeds come from what instances. Particularly when making recommendations for folks coming via #TwitterMigration. For example, my instance is local-oriented, so I can't recommend it to non-locals. Seeing "where" I follow at-a-glance would help inform recommendations.

Like, I have a good "general sense" of what instances are available, but also no practical data to back that up. A visualization of what instances make up my feeds would be very helpful when telling people what instances are available. I can imagine it'd also help mods. |
@vkc Setting up a website is so easy these days. Just put it on a friggin Wordpress with the default theme for christ sake.
