So #Twitter suddenly reminds/demands #Meta not scrape public Twitter data in their lawyer's letter today.

Twitter claimed a massive data scraping operation under way a few days ago as a justification for post read limits.

And Meta launches #Threads today. Which conveniently has no post / rate limits.

Does it sound like these events are entirely unconnected?

Johannes Ernst

So #PolyPoly is no more. Insolvent. Sorry to hear that. It was an interesting experiment combining for-profit, not-for-profit, and a coop.

I would love to see a postmortem, so other efforts trying to give control over #personal #data to individuals -- like mine! -- can learn from it. #personaldata #privacy

Why does the Apple #appstore on the Mac not show me my last 4 downloads I made on the iPhone?

Jon

@J12t of course! I've got a blog post from over a dozen years ago when I talk about him ratcheting up the exploitation.

FYI @mariyadelano per your point yesterday about no ads on #threads (yet)

DELETED

@J12t so now we know the first enshitification threshold when FB will pivot away from users to favor it's business customers.

Johannes Ernst

A lot of product roadmaps are going to be tossed today.

#threads

Johannes Ernst

So how does one scale up a web app from 0 to >30 million users in less than 24 hours?

Unless you run something like Instagram already, thatโ€™s not really a feat that can be done, no?

Johannes Ernst

About now, #metaโ€™s #threads app is surpassing the size of the #fediverse. According to mark zuckerberg, it took 7 hours since opening it up for 10 million sign-ups.

Let that sink in. 7 hours for 10 million sign-ups. It took the fediverse โ€ฆ at least 5 years since the standard, and lots of time before that?

This is significantly faster than even the most aggressive projections. At this speed, #twitter will be surpassed within weeks not months.

Will they keep their #activitypub commitment?

@J12t believing anything Zuckerberg says is doing a lot of work here.

And the obsession with numbers is part of the problem.

Rob Gilton

@J12t will they keep their activitypub commitment? No, of course not! In the short term it makes them look good to regulators.

In the long term they'll kill it off, probably with some handwavy justification along the lines of "spam is difficult", or "monetisation" etc.

Dennis Jernberg

@J12t I heard it's now (at this writing) 50M. Of course that's easy if you make signing up trivial (if you're on Instagram, just one click puts you on Threads too).

As for their ActivityPub commitment, my Mastodon timeline's already showing instance admins declaring they've already blocked Threads...

Jeff Sikes

@J12t It's obvious it got rushed out when they saw the mass migrations happening from the latest Twittaster. Bluesky is...well..it will certainly put a ding in their growth. It might push them to get that ActivityPub integration up and running. The ding on growth will be true of Mastodon and other fediverse platforms, too.

Johannes Ernst

#metaโ€™s new #threads app supposedly had 2 million sign-ups in the first 2 hours!!! According to Zuck on Threads.

Johannes Ernst

So I'm on #threads to check it out. So far it's surprisingly basic. Can't even find hash tags.

Matthew Miller :donor:

@J12t GIFs are also non-obvious to post too, you have to paste them into the post. Clearly they'll make stuff like that more obvious as they iterate on the UI, I'm curious to see how they expand on this.

Mariya Delano

@J12t I was quite disappointed that there are no hashtags or feed customizability options

Johannes Ernst

Iโ€™ve been complaining so much about terrible #ux from my kitchen stove and coffee grinder to various fediverse apps. But I think the ride sharing appsโ€™ maps animated with the currently location of the approaching driver is brilliant.

Alex Voss

@J12t You mean the one where I can see that the driver has turned and is heading away from me again? ;o)

Tuesday was even hotter than Monday, which was the globally hottest day ever recorded. I had speculated the Monday record wouldnโ€™t stand long. I did not think it would be 24 hours.

Greetings from the airport in Phoenix, AZ, where it apparently is 110F (43C) at 8pm. Whoever thought building a major city here was a good ideaโ€ฆ

Johannes Ernst

I was wrong. I get to greet you all not just from the airport, but from the city itself! First American takes a long time to find a part to repair the plane we were waiting in, and then they canceled the flight and took us back off that plane. Next try: tomorrow morning.
Currently waiting curbside for hotel pickup. It has cooled down to a mere 98F.

der.hans

@J12t hadn't ever heard of global warming or global climate change :)

Johannes Ernst

#Meta's #Threads #Twitter competitor apparently will not be available in the #EU due to #GDPR: it collects too much personal data! What a handicap for them!
Also, many non-EU countries follow GDPR principles as the gold standard, so it's doubtful there as well.
And then we have California with the CCPA and Colorado etc that have similar provisions.
Meta -- why would you cripple your effort like this from the get-go?

ShadSterling

@J12t wasnโ€™t the supposed motivation to claim compliance with EU interoperability requirements? Is this a failure or a sign that they have a different motivation?

DELETED

@J12t it is launching in the uk I believe

ShadSterling

@J12t Iโ€™m tempted to be impressed with how quickly it went from rumor to expected launch, but Iโ€™m not holding my breath on either the date or the usability

Are they calling it an Instagram app rather than a Meta app because they think Instagram (by Meta) has a better reputation?

Disappointing but not surprising that the tracking footprint is basically that theyโ€™ll spy on you every way they can

Johannes Ernst

Ouch. โ€œSuch theories are compelling, but they all share a flaw, in that they presuppose both a rational actor and a plan.โ€

Not that I disagree with the Atlantic. #twitter

I just realized that kids these days have no idea what โ€œmultimediaโ€ is. It has always been that way for them.
