I've toyed with chatgpt like many have, but it holds so little interest I can't imagine using it for anything or how it might even remotely be usable for anything I do.

Everything I do is utterly integral with the process of doing it. Code is research.

Current long term project is, I have this flock of birds, I call them, little samd51 powered boxes with mp3s on SD card, a tiny crappy radio, a big white LED, speaker, lipo and solar panel. There's a PIR sensor (detects humans and dogs) and They react to mammals with song, but also tell all their neighbors that song too (bird songs).

They live outside (long term, uptimes of a year). There's a sorta mesh multicast network they negotiate amongst themselves (including frequency). Radio is on for 100 ms every 2 sec.

The current project is to have them negotiate singing rounds(note). One spontaneously chooses a neighbor, invites them, plays a note, this propagates throughout the flock (10 of them), recruiting neighbors and working out timeslots etc.

Past one level in, it's chaotic of course and the challenge is to keep the chaos pleasant and reliable. Ive done some allied things so it's not all mystery going forward, but the point is, there's not a fixed goal, and the interactions are wild.

The point and fun of projects and research is that process, right? I admit I haven't worked in the tech industry for a loong time but are goals today so fixed in place you can aim at them so precisely? I can't imagine they really are. Lol they weren't like that any time I recall.

Glad I don't have to work for the fuckwits anymore.

NOTE: in the early 90s late 80s, on a road trip I was camping along the Mississippi River somewhere, id eaten and it got dark, mosquitos were hell, so I was sitting on the sites picnic table, long pants and sleeves, hoody over my head strong pulled into a small hole to breathe through. I had ingested some lsd and was sitting utterly silent, long enough that in the pitch black, large birds arrived to raid the trash can next to me. They did not know I was there!

I sat for hours listening to the incredible orchestra of animals, mostly birds I assume... The cacophony was loud, dense, relentless. After I while I noticed it was patterned... Birds were singing in rounds. A bird squawked, then the next, each waiting for a gap to speak in. I could hear the same, or similar, voice repeat on loose patterns of a few seconds. Probab ly some of the "same" voices were birds of the same kind talking. It was like a party line phone with a thousand simultaneous conversations...

... Every night, forever. Absolutely fucking amazing. Profoundly profound and all that.

So I'm making a simulation of that.

Lemmy.world got hacked tonight. One of the admins accounts compromised and a bunch of childish hacks performed. Was down for a bit but back up. Probably under control now.

Shit Happens.

I'm really liking Lemmy.world. It has the chaos and energy I want. Focus is slowly appearing in particular communities.

And the flood! IDC about reddit, and I'm not cheerleading, not gonna estimate the scale of, its demise. But very many reddit folk are showing up. That's the chaos.

Poor young folk. They seem to worry how anyone will make money, or become big enough, all the noise gleaned from Industry News for the last 20 years. But slowly at least some are cluing in.

The good thing about the cluelessness (largely excusable unless it persists) is that it works in spite of it. And clued in to the workings, it will work better.

@tomjennings have you started any communities or threads over there? I have really been enjoying watching Lemmy communities blossom as well!
