20 years later, real-time Linux makes it to the kernel - really zdnet.com/article/20-years-lat by @sjvn

Real-time #Linux is finally here, but long before it got here the project had made fundamental improvements to mainstream Linux.

Aho

@sjvn is priint_K a typo or? I only find it mentioned twice, your article and a French (auto translated?) article.

I finally found the perfect printer repair tool.

@sjvn

Showed this pic to someone and a conversation ensued about how the handle was affixed, where it came from, etc.

We showed the pic to someone with the question, "what's wrong with this?"
"They're not using it to smash that copier behind it."

Operating system internals aren't nearly as bloody as you might, despite what's in the table of contents.

@sjvn #alt4you Photo of the table of contents of a book:

9.4.1 Having Children
9.4.2 Watching Your Children Die
9.4.3 Running New Programs
9.4.4 A Bit of History: `vfork()`
9.4.5 Killing Yourself
9.4.6 Killing Others
9.4.7 Dumping Core

To infinity and Beyond

@sjvn reminded me that once I tried to type “man kill” in my terminal, but ended up typing it in my browser… Definitely NOT the instructions I’m not looking for

Switzerland now requires all government software to be open source zdnet.com/article/switzerland- by @sjvn

Switzerland is one of the world's leading #opensource countries; now, if only the United States could follow its lead!

@sjvn

That is very nice if Switzerland and any other country doing it realizes that open source programmers need to eat and pay bills. 🧐

Comming from a government with huge piles of cash inside the country sounds more like reduce costs with free labor. 😒

Oh the buts: "... the law not only allows the release of OSS by the Swiss government or its contractors, but also requires the code to be released under an open-source license "UNLESS the RIGHTS of THIRD PARTIES or SECURITY-RELATED REASONS would EXCLUDE or RESTRICT this."

@sjvn why am I this bothered by the fact that there is an Y instead of a Z between the T and U keys on that keyboard?

Canonical's 'distroless' Linux images are a game-changer for enterprises zdnet.com/article/canonicals-d by

Canonical is making a "distroless" #Linux play for your container and cloud computing needs with 12 years of support.

@sjvn well Windows 11 is a better copy of KDE than Windows 10. The virtual desktop works almost as good as on *Ubuntu (or any other user oriented Linux version).

@sjvn I miss the #Microsoft MVP summit, it was such a great opportunity to meet with hundreds of people from all over the world, discuss, debate and interact with product teams at Microsoft. It was also fun being on campus and visiting the company store. Also, Microsoft MVP's are customer advocates, so, they share direct feedback about the product issues with the teams that work on them. Also, if you attend a conference like this, you are likely a fan of the product.

I hate these AI-generated Lego images. Not just for the usual reasons, but also because there's no way to build them!

@sjvn Well, I like to take my time and eat slowly. Around 300 bits and I need a couple of drinks. So I grab a pair-a-tea. My wife then grumps at me for taking her tea so I make her a cup of coffee and call it even. Then to finish my meal. I'm about to start bit, but I'm interrupted by the cat and tell them to stop bit. 🧐

benny

@sjvn okay, I'm one of zhose old guys whose fridge does nothing but cool stuff down. This makes me wonder: what is the attached computer meant to be used for? I doubt its creator intendee it to run Linux desktop software as a laptop replacementn

sjvn

Would you believe this is how we used to install Arch Linux?

Show previous comments
&y

@sjvn I will believe this is how Arch used to be installed if you show me that there are dickhead experts off-camera who refuse any assistance and actively berate anyone who asks questions about the installation process.

Paul Knightly, PhD

@sjvn truly an engineering marvel how ancient civilizations unlocked the superior strength that the humble arch provided for supporting their software infrastructure.

@sjvn Not to be the "akshually" guy, but if you want to multiply a temperature by three you should do it in Kelvins. 300°F = 422 K. Yes, yes, I know this is a meme.

@sjvn The first error was the ridiculous use of imperal measures that near nobody uses or knows. Use Celsius like 96.2% of humans do. 😁
