A sustainable energy system does not only require sustainable production, it also requires sustainable consumption. And at the moment, considering the vast majority of energy is produced by fossil fuels, sustainable consumption means consuming much less, until global emission have been reduced to acceptable levels.
Current typical smart phone lifetime is 3 years.
To compensate for the greenhouse gas emissions from production, distribution and disposal, they should last from 25 to 232 (!) years.
Hi everyone, I am organising LOCO 2024, 1st International Workshop on Low Carbon Computing
It's hybrid and will be held 3 Dec 2024, in Glasgow (Scotland) and on line.
On line attendance is free; in person is £30
Deadline 1 Oct (full talk)/ 8 Oct (lightning talk)
Please consider submitting, whether you're academic or not, and please spread the word.

I will be submitting a talk to low carbon computing. Register Machines are much less energy efficient than stack machines. if you have 32 registers, every two operand ALU instruciton requires 5 bits for both operands and 5 bits for the destnation register. 15 bits. In 16 bits I can do a whole 16 bit stack instruction. One stack instruction per clock cycle. And pipelines waste some 30% of computations when they reset.
It is even worse than that, not only will this AI hype slow down phasing out of fossil fuels, it will also lead to a huge rise in emission from chip and server production and data centre construction.
I wrote about this earlier, "The insatiable hunger of (Open)AI"
From next academic year, all our undergraduate degrees in Computing Science and Software Engineering will have sustainability and decarbonisation embedded in their programmes. I'm proud of this.
If you need ChatGPT to be happy, then your happiness is too dearly bought. If you don't need it to be happy but still use it, then your convenience is certainly not worth that cost to the world.
This thing uses obscene amounts of energy and water, at a moment when we can't afford to spend more energy on anything, but should be cutting our energy consumption drastically. And it's only the gateway to more and more of such services.
I will give an online talk for the fedi Solstice School on 2023-07-26 (Wed) 13:00 UTC
"Funktal: a frugal functional programming language"
Funktal is a "modern" functional programming language for the Uxn virtual machine, a tiny VM with 64 kB of memory. I will explain why I created it, some of the cool functional features it has, how it is implemented and why, and where it could be going.

@wim_v12e I'm upset I won't be able to watch it live, we'll still be away from internet when the stream happens. I hope to read a transcript of it aftward :) Have fun!
