Coles Street Pothole 💀

@loren This pic reminds me that yesterday I *almost* won Wingspan yesterday and my first card was a Red-Breasted Nuthatch!

@loren
Very nice picture of a great little bird.

@loren We all know that without them, many tree species would go extinct (nuts could never hatch) and there would no longer be a species strong enough to open brazil nuts or precise enough to get whole walnuts out.

Never enough nuthatches.

@loren I met a neighborly mining bee recently, it really lived up to its name! It landed on my leg and hung out for a while.

A fuzzy little bee basking in the sun on a blue pant leg. Its yellow fluff looks like it is circled around a bald spot on its upper back. Its antenna look alert.

They're also good for throwing them at people who are annoying you 🧅

i was looking through some old pictures and found these from when i monitored nesting black skimmers on the beach about 10 years ago. look at these little fluff balls!

#birds

an adult black skimmer sitting in a little depression in the sand, at the top edge of the depression a little sand colored chick sits upright. the chick is very fluffy and cute, the adult is all black with a white face and a long orange and black beak which is longer on the bottom than on the top
here is another chick awkwardly sitting up next to an adult skimmer. the chick is still fluffy and cute and has its little wing tucked to its side and neck outstretched a bit
a different adult sitting in a depression with now two little chicks. the one is sitting up next to parent skimmer while the other stands a few inches away standing upright looking like a little cotton ball on legs
the same little family but now the chick who is sitting near parent has their beak wide open in a "feed me" yell and their sibling has sat down since its hard work being a tiny cute chick

i love skimmers so much, what strange looking creatures. i wish i had a recording of what these colonies sounded like though. it was an absolute cacophony lmao

@loren I used to see them fairly often where I used to live, and loved seeing the skimming in action. Magic.

It wasn’t until years later I saw a photo of what they look like end-on. Had no idea their bills were so narrow! Awesome.

@loren What, woah, who are these guys with the Flintstones beaks and why have I never been aware of them before?

Loren

i had been thinking to myself: "do not try and take pictures of the flying swallows, it never turns out well. they're too fast and i am tired and hot and ready to leave"

so of course this guy has to go and land right in front of me in a low tree.

i basically just held down the shutter for 10 minutes straight while they hung out for a while. they did a little preening, a little yelling, and by that point i was ready to go sit down so i had to say goodbye to my new tree swallow friend.

@loren How did that happen, I thought they never stop flying about.

@loren @she_goes_on #birdsofmastodon #aberdeen Last spring newly arrived swallows had to take shelter from gale force winds and torrential rain under the eaves of our block of flats. One one was found dead on our veranda, the poor thing was covered in ticks.

A few dozen swallows clinging to a brick wall taking shelter from a storm.
