Don't push to prod on a Friday

To be safe, don't push to prod on a Thursday night.

Really, someone might be off so don't push on Thursday.

Consider not pushing to prod on Weds, as that's when everyone is running their security scans.

Don't push to prod on Tuesday for reasons I can't yet think of.

Don't push to prod on Monday, you're still getting over the weekend.

Consider just not pushing to prod.

Library impacts from Crowdstrike -- looks like Summon says it's down but I'm getting some results and the site is up. I wish I had my recent count of tests I ran at the end of June -- it looks like it may currently be a little heavy on our book/ebook collections and not all journal articles?

Thousands of archivists and librarians over here gesticulating *yes, finally, we've been saying this for a decade+*

Person realizing that the internet is not an archive, more like broadsides and pamphlets, the vast majority of content from 7 years ago is gone. And noting that online resources libraries shift to getting cut back means we're getting more loss.

In some ways, maybe it's fine, but also maybe it's not. However the broadsides and pamphlets metaphor is a good one (and one I'm pretty sure I've heard at least one archivist use before)

Fun mastodon thing -- there's a lot of GREAT artists on here, so a) you can enjoy people's art! and b) you can commission things! In the 5 years I've been on Mastodon, I've commissioned a patch, gotten digital art, all kinds of little things.

my husband informs me that today is the Feast of the Ass

... I am torn between "heh heh" and "that's actually very sweet"

I unironically love this 1996 version of our library catalog...
web.archive.org/web/1996101814

and by catalog, I more mean a site where you can click to launch the catalog in telnet! And do other things.

also the LOGO

The logo says LIAS over a kind of sun made up of horizontal bars with white stripes between them (and maybe 3 web-safe colors gradiated?). Under it it says Penn State University, Library Information Access System, Library Computing Services

Every. single. university:

"We're transforming education for the 21st century and our new digital environment."

ALSO YOU MUST BE BACK IN PERSON

Discussing privacy in libraries today and was reminded of this Calvin and Hobbes cartoon which influenced me early re: surveillance...

(I had to ask my mom what a CIA spook was)

Calvin is listening "Santa Claus is Coming to Town" and, after the creepy lyrics about what he knows asks "Santa Claus: Kindly old elf, or CIA Spook?"

TIL a really cool, safe method for GROUNDHOG DETECTION!

If you have a hole that you think a groundhog might be living in (and we have several at the new house), place a light object over it.

Something that a groundhog could move and something you'll notice if it's been moved.

We trimmings from a tree that was scraping the house.

And now? WE WAIT.

Reading the book HYPE which is, of course, the biography of Clifford Lynch.*

*it’s actually about influencers and online hype/scam/grift

Looking for an alternative to a David Brooks article...

Someone on a project I'm in wants to cite David Brooks's 2020 piece "The Nuclear Family Was a Mistake" which is honestly... pretty good for Brooks?

theatlantic.com/magazine/archi

But I know that this has been said before and better by POC and I am looking for a good piece on the subject to support the concept of extended family/kinship/chosen family networks vs. focus in nuclear family.

Boosts ok/appreciated!

Looking for YouTube channels reccs for a 75-ish old white dude with mild dementia who wants to be entertained by things like documentaries and how stuff works videos and is just generally a gentle and curious person who also takes EVERYTHING he hears at face value and thus is v much at risk to the YouTube algorithmβ€” albeit his wife is trying to stay on top of it but she still works and stuff.

Darius Kazemi

@platypus very calming cooking, farming, and carpentry videos with high production values: youtube.com/channel/UCoC47do52
