The Windows/Linux situation over the past few decades is an interesting study in just how bad you can make a paid product before people will suffer some friction to move to a free one. Alright, time to announce it properly - my side project is almost ready for release! SWORDS of FREEPORT! The bastard step-child of Legend of the Red Dragon and a MUD! I blogged about it: https://www.elissablack.com/swords-of-freeport/ And it's got an itch page: https://expectproblems.itch.io/swords-of-freeport Coming soon - and yes, I will need play-testers! (Like, very soon.)

@vampiress Wow.. I hadn't thought of LoRD in a really long time prior to this post. A favorite part of my day in high school. Thanks for the hard work, and for reviving a good memory! (And I'll definitely help with testing when the need arrives if there's a spot open!) @vampiress oh this looks like so much fun. i love 'i need a break from my main project' game development

@vampiress I had fun doing a thread on it last year 😀 (all adventure games included) ➡️ https://mastodon.social/@Gamrok/109161712284277632 I'm sure I've forgotten some! Fond memories of the bar from Space Quest I (I seem to recall ZZ Top playing in there as well), but deep down I'm probably more of a Scumm Bar kinda person... 😉 @vampiress reminded me of going to cash converters in the 90s and buying floppy disks for $1, most of which have pirated Amiga 500 games on them. |
@vampiress I would argue structural barriers were erected by private interests to prevent moving being viable at lower levels of friction. Just like in all the other situations they did that.
@vampiress People with money can pay a bit more for a user-friendly crippled Linux-like experience integrated onto shiny hardware.
@vampiress sound like windows/linux is to OS as twitter/fedi is to spcial media
