Hey, are there any good #mbin clients for iOS?

Ads are coming to Threads—and therefore something that has (somewhat) enabled ActivityPub.

This is a good opportunity to tell people you can go ad-free on Mastodon, Akkoma, Sharkey, GoToSocial, etc.

IT HAPPENED!!! 😮

#Pixelfed just hit 501,707 users!

It’s only the 3rd Fediverse software distribution to hit 500K accounts!

And it just overtook #Peertube to become the 3rd must used Fediverse distribution too!

I will laugh if #Meta announced #ActivityPub integration with #Instagram because #Pixelfed is growing in popularity.

And that scenario is actually plausible. They’d do it while Pixelfed is tiny in order to head off the threat.

I’ve created @surf feeds for every single prominent #Fediverse software distribution.

Congrats to @dansup and the entire #Pixelfed and #Loops community! 🎉🥳🎈

In less than a day, the Pixelfed and Loops Kickstarter campaign crushed its funding goals!

And we still have 44 additional days to go! 💪

Head’s up! #Pixelfed is highly likely to reach 500,000 accounts this week.

And remember, it just reached 400,000 accounts last week. The service is growing fast and steady!

Looks like pixelfed.social, the largest Pixelfed server, just now reached 200K accounts!

Android Authority also has their review of Pixelfed.

Amusingly, they say this about it:

What sets Pixelfed apart is its classic Instagram-like approach that prioritizes sharing photos and videos with like-minded people.

Okay, it really is hilarious that Pixelfed stands out because it’s a lot like Instagram was. But yeah, I agree.

Two days ago, Pixelfed broke 300,000 registered users.

Right now, it has 369,356.

Let me make a prediction: it will break 400,000 users by the weekend.
Chris Trottier

From what I’m seeing, most Pixelfed registrations are from TikTok – not Instagram.

Also, TikTok will be shut down – not sold!

So I hope @dansup is fully prepared for the avalanche that’s coming on Sunday – because that’s when the TikTok ban fully comes into effect.

For the first time ever, Mastodon’s share of Fediverse distribution software has dropped below 70%.

This is due to Pixelfed’s sudden growth. 50,000 people joined today.

Great write up on TechCrunch about PixelFed’s iOS launch!

Already in 24 hours, Pixelfed has gained 11,000 users. Right now, the app has 311,575 total users.

And on Android, it’s the #1 social app in several markets including the U.S.

This is the most exciting week on the Fediverse since the beginning of November 2022.

To be honest, not much happened in 2024. Sure, there were a few interesting developments, but compared to 2022 and 2023, last year was quiet. In fact, I didn’t spend much time talking about the Fediverse at all. Most of 2024, I focused on markets, video games, and music. Occasionally, I shared some news, but it wasn’t my main focus.

But today? Wow. A lot of major developments happened in a short span of time.

Eugen Rochko Resigning

The most shocking news: @Gargron is stepping down as CEO of Mastodon and transferring all trademarks and copyrights to the Mastodon nonprofit. That’s huge.

Pixelfed & Meta Drama

There’s been a rush to Pixelfed due to recent moderation changes at Meta. Meta got caught removing links to PixelFed on Instagram, sparking an uproar. This backlash even caused PixelFed to trend on BlueSky.

Meta tried to walk back their actions, claiming it was a “mistake.” Let’s be real: they only backpedaled because people noticed. If Meta throttles PixelFed links while boasting about Threads joining the Fediverse, they undermine trust. They know this, so they reinstated the links.

Elon Musk & TikTok Rumors

Another major story: Reports suggest Elon Musk might buy TikTok. If the U.S. government bans TikTok, ByteDance will have to either shut down U.S. operations or sell. Increasingly, Musk looks like the buyer. Of course, nothing is certain until the deal is signed, but if it happens, expect a mass exodus from TikTok.

Loops.Video is Coming

The final bombshell: @dansup, the mind behind PixelFed, announced the website for loops.video will go live this week.

I started using Loops today through TestFlight, and I’m blown away. It’s smooth, intuitive, and genuinely fun to use. Many were skeptical that a TikTok-like experience could work on an ActivityPub-enabled service, but I’m telling you: loops.video is amazing.

Here’s how I know it’s not just me: I gave it the “kid test.” I handed my phone to my 11-year-old daughter and said, “Have fun.” She was riveted. If an 11-year-old gets this excited about Loops, this platform has serious potential.

The Future of Video on the Fediverse

I’ve said this for a long time: video is critical for the Fediverse to succeed. Text-based platforms work for older generations, but kids live in the world of video. If we want the Fediverse to thrive with future generations, video has to be a major component.

PeerTube is great and has its fans, but it doesn’t hit the same way loops.video does. This is a different experience entirely.

A Huge Day for the Fediverse

Today, I’ve posted more about the Fediverse than I have in months. Between Mastodon’s leadership change, the PixelFed drama, the TikTok-Musk rumors, and the launch of loops.video, it’s been an incredible day.

And I believe the best is yet to come.

Big news! A loops.video website is launching this week!

It will be needed if Elon Musk buys TikTok—which looks likely!

loops.video will be launching the new website this week, and we are in the process of getting our app on the iOS App Store 🚀

It's open source, and federated via ActivityPub!

It is highly like that TikTok will actually be banned.

This is all the more reason to support @dansup's project loops.video—it is federated, decentralized, and open source—it *cannot* be banned!

Confirmed. ChatGPT is actively indexing the Fediverse, even small servers like mine who have not explicitly consented to their indexing.

So while people on Mastodon got angry about Mastodon having built-in discovery features, ChatGPT just went ahead and slurped up all your posts.

After Mastodon and Threads, it is now the third major ActivityPub-enabled platform to hit 1 million users!
