The first incremental backup to my parents' NAS just finished running 🥳 686.5 gigabytes, 2 days and 19 hours In case you missed it, I went on the Self-Hosted Show with @ironicbadger and @ChrisLAS to talk about power efficient home servers and media transcoding: @notthebee @ironicbadger @ChrisLAS just read the first line but since I never used pfSense I haven‘t heard it yet The mainstream "tech" YouTubers and their consequences have been a disaster for my comment section. Thanks to LTT and co. indiscriminately telling their viewers about how hard drives are "dead" and doing sponsored server builds with 16TB SSD arrays, I now have to endure at least one teenager with a Roblox pfp per week commenting "HDDs are dead lol, nobody should be using spinning rust! downvoted and unsubscribed" under my video.

@notthebee HDD's are still good value if you want more storage capacity than r/w speed. But, yea. Society. @notthebee Actually rust centrifuges are obsolete for most people, then again most people probably ought to look into backing up there data... That said I almost regret not buying two smaller SSDs instead of the 2x8TB for backup of the primary 2xnvme drives in the server. @notthebee "don't use VHS, betamax is the way" or "don't use simple DVDs or blurays, Disney hd DVD will win out". I only use my sdd to boot up the system it's not meant for long term storage. Does anyone own an Asrock N100DC-ITX running Linux and is able to run this command for me? sudo lspci -vv | awk '/ASPM/{print $0}' RS= | grep --color -P '(^[a-z0-9:.]+|ASPM )' NixOS home server is coming along nicely. Managed to configure most of my containers, using Podman this time around. And all of that on a ZFS root. Pretty neat! The config is still pretty messy but hey, it works https://github.com/notthebee/nix-config

@notthebee I started using after I saw the video and all my friends mock me for it…. except a dyslexic friend who started using the font as well @notthebee definitely not for me, but i get the vision. i love a aesthetic terminal, but not the handwritten looking font. @notthebee хорошее видео! As a very famous and influential Youtuber(tm) who often searches for footage/memes/other stuff to put in my videos: Multi-hour videos and their consequences have been a disaster for the yt-dlp race. Okay, that's it, I'm making a video about the whole Twitter/Mastodon situation. Will try to record/edit it today so that it doesn't come out when it's already irrelevant Would love to run my own Mastodon instance just for my account, but seeing how I my public-facing services are down for 3-5 days before I finally kick myself and fix the issue… probably not the best idea. Anyway, I just set up cloudflared for my self-hosted stuff, mostly because I CBA to constantly have to figure out why port forwarding/NAT/firewall is broken and how to fix it. @notthebee |
congrats on the successfull backup tho 😸
@notthebee You mentioned in the video that backing up to AWS/any other cloud would take long as you only have around 50Mbit/s. However I can‘t see that this argument won‘t apply to your offisite backup as well :)
